It barely scans/or totally fits that this is an economics professor
What amazes me is the attitude of so many of the centibillionaires.
A 5% tax will not make any difference to the way they live. Their spending may be extravagant, but it is still much less than their (correctly measured) income.
They know that, as gifted as some of them indeed are, they have benefited from extreme luck (and the help of the state, and, to speak like an economist, monopoly rents).
They know that their effective tax rate is low, relative to what many others pay.
They know that extreme inequality is extremely unpopular, and can lead to political unrest, backlash, or worse.
They must admit that, morally, it is hard to argue for a society in which some become obscenely wealthy, while so many are poor and see their income stagnate.
They typically have not indicated that they are building their wealth to eventually make the world a better place.
But they are still willing to fight the tax, spending hundreds of millions in California to avoid paying the tax. Why?
They simply think what is theirs is theirs, end of story.
They believe in the slippery slope, and if they do not take a stand on this levy, the government will come back for more.
They hate the state and the notion that their money will be misused?
Or?
It astounds me that people like this who with such certainty can declaim about Israel as if their opinion is worth more than a cowpat, and breeze past 2 decades of rocket/missile attacks+October 7th.
They of course occupy places in academia because that seems to be the repository for stupid people
I think policy would be measurably better if Yair golan won but he has no chance. Yes, among the viable candidates Netanyahu might be the least bad option because they’re the same on Palestinian “policy,” and yet Netanyahu is easier for us to deprecate. The society and all mainstream parties overwhelmingly support ethnic cleansing, apartheid, and destroying Gaza.
As someone who invokes international law at every turn, I'm always puzzled why Alonso ignores the vote on Partition on November 29th 1947 and instead invents this "secession" narrative instead.
Classic wanting the cake and eating it

I’ve noticed that our musical Hallel on Chol Hamoed Sukkos is being discussed on social media.
Many were inspired by it. Others criticized it as being some sort of “reformation” of our Avodas Hashem.
The specific, technical question is not a new one. There is room for legitimate debate in the realm of halacha and minhag.
But something else has crept into this conversation, and I think it needs to be called out.
Musical Hallel is suddenly being dismissed by some as “a Modox invention.” As a “Zionist” phenomenon. As something that belongs to a supposedly “less serious” stream of Orthodox Judaism.
And that is not a Torah argument.
There is an enormous difference between a halachic debate and saying, “Of course those kinds of Jews would do something like this.”
The first is a machlokes. The second is using Torah language as cover for contempt toward other frum Jews. And we should be intellectually honest enough to know the difference.
You are completely entitled to believe that another Torah community is mistaken. Torah Judaism has never had full uniformity of minhag, hashkafah, or practice.
But disagreement in this realm demands enough respect for another Torah community to actually engage its position.
And no - labels are not arguments.
“Modox” is not a mareh makom.
“Zionist” is not a legitimate rebuttal.
Our mesorah contains fierce machlokes. Beis Hillel and Beis Shammai were not engaged in a campaign of “let’s all get along.” They believed that matters of Torah were worth arguing about.
But they argued about Torah.
That distinction matters.
Because there is something deeply unhealthy about reaching for Torah language when what you really want to say is that you do not respect the religious world of the Yidden standing across from you.
We can argue more seriously.
We can insist that Torah ideas be defended with Torah substance rather than sociological cudgels.
If there’s one thing that we can learn on this 3rd anniversary of October 7th, it is perhaps that we need to recover more honest machlokes. The art of holy disagreement while still loving and respecting our brothers and sisters who might not agree with every one of our opinions.
You don't get to vote Zionism is Racism om Sunday and offer consolation of October 7th on Wednesday. And cowards turn off replies.
