Rupert Lowe has identified a real crisis in NHS dentistry.
But he’s looking for scapegoats, not solutions.
Migrants didn’t break NHS dentistry.
A failed contract and years of underfunding did.
Dentistry access across Britain is a total mess - I had a constituent who pulled his own tooth out because of the pain. We need to get a grip, yet nobody is talking about it.
What will a Restore Britain Government do?
1. Train more British dentists.
Expand dental school places and provide bursaries for British students who commit to serving areas most affected by shortages. Build more dental schools, all over Britain.
Increase training places for dental nurses, hygienists, therapists and technicians.
Importantly - we will offer financial incentives for emigrated British dentists and qualified professionals to return to Britain.
2. Free dental training for British students.
We will provide fully funded dental education and training for British citizens who commit to serving NHS patients in Britain for a minimum of ten years after qualifying. (More professions will be included in this policy, details to come soon).
Those who fulfil their commitment will have their tuition fees covered in full. Those who leave early or choose not to fulfil their service commitment will be required to repay a proportionate amount.
The first two points are quite straightforward - we will invest in our own people.
3. Only British citizens for NHS dentistry.
Overhaul eligibility rules so routine NHS-funded dentistry is only given to British citizens.
We will end access to routine NHS-funded dental treatment for foreign nationals.
If foreign nationals want dental care in Britain, they can pay for it UP FRONT - urgent or otherwise.
4. Reform HC2 certificates and low income schemes
We will review the NHS Low Income Scheme, including HC2 certificates, to ensure that entitlement to free NHS dental treatment is properly verified - no foreign national will have access.
5. End ALL routine NHS-funded dentistry for illegal migrants.
Under Restore Britain's proposed rules, ‘asylum seekers’ will not qualify for routine NHS-funded dental care because they are receiving asylum support or hold an HC2 certificate.
In 25/26, 201,123 of these certificates were issued to ‘asylum seekers’. It is INSANE.
They will not receive dental care, they will be deported.
6. Bring dentists back to towns and villages
We will provide targeted start-up loans and grants for independent practices opening in areas with severe shortages - offer total business rates relief to qualifying practices.
7. Reward dentists who serve underserved communities
Offer financial incentives and student loan repayment support to dentists who commit to several years of NHS work in shortage areas.
The five golden rules of business - what’s in it for me? If we want to help these communities, it will cost.
We will encourage experienced dentists to remain in NHS practice through flexible contracts and reduced bureaucracy.
All alongside financial incentives to bring retired dentists back into the profession.
8. Guarantee urgent dental access.
We will expand urgent dental services, including evenings and weekends. 24/7/365 access. Do it round the clock. It will cost. It’s worth it. Clear the backlog. Allowed qualified professionals to do more, freeing up the time of fully trained dentists to complete more complex work.
Introduce a target for clinically urgent patients to receive appropriate assessment or treatment within 24 hours.
9. Restore rural dentistry.
We will invest in mobile dental clinics, satellite surgeries and part-time services in communities where permanent provision is difficult for whatever reason. As stated, we will provide targeted recruitment and equipment support for practices serving rural areas.
We will not forget rural Britain.
10. Prioritise children.
Restore Britain will guarantee to improve early access to treatment, especially urgent, and reduce avoidable hospital admissions. We will put British children first.
A full Restore Britain policy paper will come, but here is the basis of our plan.
Nobody will be pulling their own teeth out under a Restore Britain Government.

We @TheBDA stand alongside @ASHScotland in support of a measure under the Tobacco and Vapes Act coming into force this week, making it an offence to sell nicotine pouches to people under the age of 18.
Thanks @BBCRadioScot for having me on to discuss oral impacts of the pouches.
ASH Scotland and dental experts in Scotland welcome the law bringing in a ban on nicotine pouches sales to under 18s coming into force later this week.

Industry leaders accuse government of changing guidance “on a whim.”
Expanding the definition of ‘unhealthy food’ to include foods high in ‘natural’ sugars is entirely the right course.
‘Natural’ or ‘added’, the damage these products can do is the same. @TheBDA
Food industry lobbyists claim new healthy eating rules will push up prices and hit investment,
They are concerned with the costs of compliance and reformulation.
They seem less interested in the costs their products impose on the NHS.

As Jenna notes, it’s very hard to see why the next generation would ever choose to build a career in the NHS.
And that’s entirely the result of political choices.@TheBDA
“My practice has five dentists and 99% of our 6,500 patients are NHS” says Jenna Murgatroyd.
“On some NHS treatments such as dentures or multiple fillings we don’t break even."

"Dentists work incredibly hard to maintain the trust of their patients," says @eddiecrouch
"The evidence is clear the overwhelming majority are satisfied with the care they receive."

Dentistry: you won’t find happier graduates.
It’s testament to the quality of education delivered by our dental academics.
The challenges so many face post-graduation are largely preventable, many the direct result of choices made by governments. theguardian.com/education/20…
"They may be registered in their own countries, but they're often not registered here, so they're actually carrying out dentistry illegally."
The pop-ups pushing dental tourism in UK hotels are often operating on the wrong side of the law.

Pleasure to speak to @CarolineNokes MP about our reliance on overseas-trained dentists.
Over 1/2 of new dentists have trained abroad & that’s soon expected to rise to 3/4.
But neither those trained in Manchester or Mumbai will want to work in an NHS system unless it's reformed.
Quality dental education requires appropriate staff-to-student ratios, particularly when students are developing clinical skills and treating patients.
Safe, sustainable teaching capacity must be part of future workforce planning.
Thanks for your support @CatherineWest1 MP.
Dental education relies on experienced clinical teachers to support students delivering patient care. @JayneKirkham4 MP thank you for stopping by and backing our academics.

As discussed with @Matthew_Patrick
MP at our drop-in today, investment in dental academics is investment in the future of dentistry.
Actions for Government: improve recruitment & retention, and give @ukdentalschools resources they need to train the dentists of tomorrow. @TheBDA
The future of dentistry depends on the people who teach the next generation.
Thanks to MPs @llinos_medi and @AnnBremenda for dropping by to discuss growing pressures on the dental academic workforce, retention and capacity in Wales. 🦷🏴

We can’t end the dental crisis without enough academics to train the dentists of the future.
Pleasure to see you @RachaelMaskell MP - thanks for continuing to speak up for the millions unable to access dental care & the dentists who against all odds continue to provide NHS care
Thank you to @SteveDarlingMP for backing academics today for the dentists of tomorrow.
Sustainable dental education and requires sustainable staffing and resources.
Looking forward to discussing NHS dentistry in more detail soon.
A new school at @uniofeastanglia presents an important opportunity but it's important that we face the workforce realities in academia.
Dental academia needs proper investment to support the planned expansion.
Thanks for your continued support @jamesowild MP.
If UK governments don’t value today’s dental academics, there is simply no way of training tomorrow’s dentists.
Training more dentists hinges on Ministers making the right calls here.

When we lifted the lid on the scale of this problem in 2022 we never expected the sheer volume of stories.
But demand has surged.
The industry has innovated.
And UK watchdogs have yet to step up

"I nearly died. Don't do it."
A heart-breaking warning from Martyn Kurrant.
Patients can pay a high price to pay for cheap treatment, when they lose out on continuity of care, strong communication and clear rights of redress.
