You know, I've been racking my brain trying to remember when else in history a great military power launched a war of aggression against a neighboring country, failed to defeat it on the battlefield for years -- and then the leadership of another great power (which the aggressor had regarded as its archenemy until just yesterday!!) engaged in petty, sordid collusion with the aggressor, made a complete 180-degree turn, and began actively working to force its undefeated victim into capitulation and extinction as a nation.
I'm honestly trying to think of historical precedents -- but it seems that never before in the history of this world under the heavens has there been such a spectacular display of deranged idiocy.

๐จ OLESHKY. I WARNED ABOUT THIS MORE THAN A MONTH AGO. NOW I DEMAND ANSWERS FROM THE WHITE HOUSE AND THE U.S. CONGRESS โผ๏ธ
A little over a month ago, when the world was saying โGoogle Oleshkyโ and talking about the humanitarian catastrophe, I immediately recognized the danger: Russia would try to turn the tragedy of Oleshky into a repetition of the Donbas scenario of 2014.
On September 24, I had already publicly warned about this. I recorded two videos explaining the mechanisms I could already see with my own eyes: the exploitation of civilian suffering, humanitarian rhetoric, and information manipulation to justify Russian aggression.
And what are we seeing today?
The White House announced a humanitarian agreement mediated by Melania Trump. Meanwhile, Russian state media are turning coverage of this operation into a demonstration of the Russian armyโs supposed humanity.
Putin, a humanitarian? Russia, a savior?
This is precisely the image the Kremlin now has an opportunity to promote to Russian society and international audiences.
And all of this is happening just before the U.S. midterm elections.
I believe the White House must explain why its humanitarian initiative is creating such advantageous propaganda opportunities for the Kremlin.
And I demand an investigation into whether these agreements are being exploited for Donald Trumpโs political interests ahead of the elections.
What exactly did American representatives discuss with the Russian leadership? What roles did Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner play? What agreements were reached?
Were there political arrangements that were never disclosed to Ukrainian society?
These questions require an independent investigation, not another press conference.
It is unacceptable to me that the humanitarian catastrophe of Ukrainians could become political currency in relations between Washington and Moscow.
These are human lives. These are Ukrainians who have been living under Russian occupation for years.
And if their suffering is being exploited for political deals or election campaigning, that is a moral catastrophe.
I am addressing both Democrats and Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate: DEMAND FULL TRANSPARENCY IMMEDIATELY!
Congress must investigate every aspect of how this agreement was negotiated, the security guarantees for civilians, the involvement of Russian state media, and the possible political exploitation of this operation.
How could American authorities allow a humanitarian initiative to become a propaganda platform for the very state occupying Oleshky?
DO NOT ALLOW UKRAINIAN BLOOD TO BE USED FOR POLITICAL GAMES.
This is now a question of accountability not only for Russia, but also for American officials and the decisions they make.
We must act now, while there is still time to protect civilians, ensure independent international monitoring, and prevent Russia from rewriting the history of this tragedy.
I warned about the risk of repeating the Donbas scenario of 2014 back on September 24. Today, we can see why those warnings should never have been ignored.

Donโt let the tragedy of Oleshky become another Donetsk.

Evacuation โ civilians remaining โ military positions โ civilian casualties โ humanitarian consequences.
This is not speculation. It is documented history.

Extremely interesting research on the Russian mind from @ecfr
Very interesting focus groups with Russians on their view of the war.
โA striking feature across all groups is a lack of compassion for others, be it towards Ukrainians or fellow Russians sent to fight. And, although some express worries about family members getting conscripted, this does not translate into sympathy for those at the front now. In fact, people dread the return of veterans, fearing new violence at home. (โฆ)
When asked if Ukraine is a sovereign country, very few reply with a firm โYesโ. Most say it is not sovereign, or not fully soโif Ukraine is mentioned among the adversaries, it is usually the โUkrainian regimeโ, not the country. There is a recognition that Ukraine became a full-fledged, independent state in 1991; but, after that, people believe something happened that caused it to lose sovereignty. They struggle to explain what precisely this was.
(โฆ.)
If the list of Russiaโs allies is quite short, the list of unfriendly states is long. โWellโeveryone elseโ, is often the first reply. The bigger European countriesโBritain, France and Germanyโare usually named first, followed by the Baltic states, Finland and Poland; sometimes also countries like India and Turkey. NATO is an enemy too, for most respondentsโone explains that it is because โNATO keeps encroaching on other countries to bring about so-called democracy with bombs.โ Ukraine is mentioned, but not as a first choice and somewhat hesitantlyโnot because it is not seen as an enemy, but because, as explored above, Russians might not regard it as a proper country. And even where it is mentioned, few participants connect its โenemyโ status to Russiaโs own invasion of Ukraine.
(โฆ)
Europeโs image seems in many ways in sync with the Kremlinโs own rhetoric. People criticise it for โgay paradesโ, for โwomen at the helmโ, for didactic lecturing. In some groups, people get into exchanges about Europeโs decline: some maintain Europe is withering away, pointing to pride marches and migrants as proof. Others point out that many states want to join the EU just to benefit from Germanyโs or Franceโs economic might, or because they would otherwise be weaker on their own.
(โฆ)
Almost no one connects the perceived European โantagonismโ to Russia with Europeโs reaction to Putinโs invasion of Ukraine or any other actions by Russia. โI donโt know why the Finns are so antagonistic to us. Maybe they never got over the fact that we took over Karelia in 1940โ, opines one respondent. Others complain about their positive attitude towards the Baltic states and these statesโ negative attitude towards Russia: โI donโt know why they [the Baltic states] are so adversarial, most probably they were ordered to be like thatโ, concludes another participant. Confusion, propaganda, wilful ignorance and lack of curiosity probably all play their role in shaping Russiansโ perceptions of their country and its external relations. And it also helps explain why the war in Ukraine still seems distant to many in Russiaโand why Europeโs own reaction to the war is overwhelmingly seen as negative, almost unfair. ย ย
This brings to mind a conversation held by one of the authors with a Moscow sociologist long before the war. Explaining how the Russian people form opinions about the West, the scholar noted that Russiaโs own role tends to get forgotten. โFor instance, Russia invades Georgiaโthere is some outcry, then the West imposes sanctions, and soon the population will have decided that the hostile West has attacked Russia with sanctions. That something happened that led to it, that Russia did somethingโthat is soon overlooked. People settle on the opinion that these small countries do not really matter, no one very much needs them, this is all about the Westโs competition with Russia.โ Some participants in the focus groups echo this: โOn what basis is the US even imposing sanctions on us?!โ asks one puzzled respondent.โ

This is turning legit traitorous
The Trump administration is considering lifting sanctions on Russiaโs sovereign wealth fund, the Russian Direct Investment Fund, according to The New York Times. A U.S. official confirmed the administration is assessing the fundโs application for removal โthrough established proceduresโ as part of an effort to โimprove U.S.-Russia relations and help end the war.โ A final decision has not yet been made.
The Biden administration sanctioned the fund after Russiaโs 2022 invasion, calling it a โslush fundโ for Putin. People familiar told the Times that Russian officials pushed for relief in talks over the fundโs role in shipping Russian diesel to the U.S., after Trump suspended sanctions on Russian diesel October 9th. Treasury considers the fund already authorized to handle diesel and is running the normal removal process separately.
This would follow earlier actions taken by President Donald J. Trump with respect to Russian sanctions. On October 16th, President Trump signed an order waiving the duties and most of the sanctions provisions of the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act. On October 21st, as envoy Steve Witkoff met with Putin, Russia released Stephen Hubbard, a 74 year old American held since 2022. President Trump wrote that the U.S. โwas not required to give anything in return.โ In remarks that day he said the U.S. โgave nothing in exchange.โ In a Truth Social post just a few minutes later, he wrote that โif sanctions would have been placed, certainly those negotiations would have come to a complete and total halt."

In March 1949 alone, the Soviets deported over 20,000 people from Estonia. Of those deported, 79% were women and children. Specific enough?
Replying to @TheFl0orIsLaVa @sopjap
It is always funny that Baltic reactionaries never get specific about _whom_ were deported and executed under the USSR to pretend it was some kind of genocide.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Soviet Baltic deportations are well documented with specifics. Operation Priboi (March 1949) deported ~20,700 from Estonia, over 70% women and children under 16. Totals exceed 200,000 across Baltics 1940-53.

What the actual FUCK, @ufc?!
HOW THE HELL IS THIS ACCEPTABLE?!
During the SAME UFC broadcast, your English-language stream identifies Nikita Krylovโs birthplace as DONETSK, UKRAINE, while your ruzzian-language stream labels it DONETSK, rUZZIA.
ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS?!
Donetsk is UKRAINE. It has ALWAYS been Ukraine. ruzziaโs illegal occupation DOES NOT change that.
While Ukrainians are being killed defending their country against ruzzian aggression, youโre casually presenting internationally recognised Ukrainian territory as ruzzian territory to your ruzzian-speaking audience?!
WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?
This isnโt some harmless translation mistake. Youโre displaying two completely different versions of reality depending on the language of the broadcast.
@ufc, we demand a PUBLIC EXPLANATION.
Who authorised this? Why was Donetsk labelled as ruzzia? And what are you going to do about it?
You donโt get to recognise Ukraineโs borders in English and erase them in ruzziab.
DONETSK IS UKRAINE! NOT rUZZIA! NEVER WAS! NEVER WILL BE!
Here is @Elonmusk, CEO of @Starlink explictly acknowledging Starlink's importance to the Ukrainian military.
Unlike most, I actually read the Starlink ToS and it explictly bans Starlink use for military purposes ourside of "Morale, Welfare and Recreation".
Musk's public statements (and there are many) of the service being used militarily clearly means either -
(a) Ukraine has an explicit contractual waiver over these provisions
(b) Musk is implicitly and clearly providing such a waiver in these regular public pronouncements
Replying to @AdamLowisz
I literally challenged Putin to one on one physical combat over Ukraine and my Starlink system is the backbone of the Ukrainian army. Their entire front line would collapse if I turned it off.
What I am sickened by is years of slaughter in a stalemate that Ukraine will inevitably lose.
Anyone who really cares, really thinks and really understands wants the meat grinder to stop.

Hey, Mr. @StephenKing, I think you need to hear this story.
This is Kostiantyn Vlasenko. He recently became the first person to be evacuated from a frontline position by drone.
He spent 491 days on the front line, during which he had to amputate both of his own legs.
In a recent interview, he shared that one of the things that kept him going was your novel The Outsider, which his wife had sent him in a package. He's a huge fan of yours. I hope youโll see this story
