Daniel Ricciardo, asked by Tom Clarkson if he regrets leaving Red Bull, says everything that went on was wild, confirms he was wanted, and admits he wishes he had stayed
CLARKSON: “One question I’ve been wanting to ask you a long time is, do you regret leaving Red Bull at the end of ‘18? Had you stayed, do you think you’d have a world championship to your name?”
RICCIARDO: “I still don’t really know how to answer it, because I definitely don’t want to say, ‘Oh yeah, I would have been world champion if I stayed,’ because I think that’s, it’s not a reality that was lived, and Max has gone on to prove that he is one of the best ever. So I don’t want to dismiss that as well and be like, ‘Yeah, I would have beat Max and become world champion,’ you know, because that’s, it wouldn’t have been an easy task. But I think it’s also maybe a bit unfair towards him to say that. Obviously I respect him a lot. So I acknowledge definitely that it was a decision that was, I mean, if I tell you everything that went on, it was wild.”
CLARKSON: “Did Dietrich Mateschitz want you to stay?”
RICCIARDO: “Yes, he did. And look, I mean, if I’m to answer it shortly, yes. I guess I wish I would have stayed, right? I say I guess, that doesn’t sound convincing. I wish I would have stayed. But I don’t know. I also, at the time, I left because I felt I was getting a bit comfortable, a bit complacent. I think there was a desire to try something else.”
Sergio Pérez reveals he lived alone at 14 among the truck drivers, too tight on budget to fly home to Mexico between races, until a friend let him live above a new restaurant with the chef
“Yeah. All the truck drivers, all the truckies, completely on my own. I was like, you know, I’m only racing on the weekends, you know. So it was really, really tough. And I couldn’t come back to Mexico between races because it was very expensive. I was very tight on budget. So for me, the toughest periods were when the race finished."
"I remember like coming back from a race, you know, we had a motor home, and Günther will drive it. I will be next to it. He will like leave me at home. I was like, you know, when is the next race? In two weeks. What I’m gonna do the next two weeks, you know, because they’re in the middle of nowhere. And those periods were very tough."
"But then Günther did a restaurant. He was building a restaurant. So he told me, ‘You want to help me to build?’ I was like, ‘Please take me wherever.’ So we start building a restaurant, and then once the restaurant was ready he told me, ‘You want to come, you can live there with the chef on the top floor.’ I was like, for sure, you know, like I could live with someone, I can speak to someone."
"It was the worst nightmare for the chef. Imagine a 14-year-old Mexican with the Mexican time zone, you know, because when I was not racing I was just speaking to my friends on the computer, but on their time zone.”

Really tough hearing Daniel Ricciardo explain why he felt humiliated after Singapore 2024, his final race.
“If people saw me out in public, I was having a good time & having a drink or whatever. I was just really hiding from what I really felt deep inside, which was a lot of pain & sadness.”
“…I was once this kid that was hoping at least to fight for a world title & obviously winning races. But now it's like, ‘oh, it's gone.’”
