On This Day In Golf

Adrien Dumont de Chassart shot 64 Thursday, then went bogey-free through 15 on Friday at the Mexico Open. -13, two clear. Matthieu Pavon posted -11 and now gets to watch the last three holes like the rest of us.

Sergio just left LIV and called the DP World Tour home again. On this day in 2011, home was where he couldn't miss: won Castelló by 11, then went to Valderrama the next week and held off Jiménez with an up-and-down on 18. First back-to-back wins of his career on that tour.

Internet Invitational lesson of the week: if they won't give it to you, you'd better be ready to hit it. Roger Steele, Rick Shiels and Short Game King all missed inside 5 feet and lost the hole. Give putts in matches or make 'em sweat? @Internetinvite

Internet Invitational Ep 2 got heated before anyone hit a shot. Last year's champ Francis Ellis and finalist Frankie Borrelli vs. Bobby Ray and Jon Gruden in alternate shot. Fair match, or did somebody get the short straw? @Internetinvite

Ben Griffin showed up in Mexico ranked 140th on Tour in making birdies. Then he made seven of them, added an eagle, and shot 64. Four in a row on 5 through 8. Clubhouse lead at Vidanta, for now.

Round 1 at Vidanta Vallarta tees off today. Nobody wins it on a Thursday, and nobody's safe on a Sunday either. On this day in 2017, Dustin Johnson took a six-shot lead into the final round in Shanghai, went 18 holes without a birdie, and shot 77. Justin Rose started eight back, came home in 31, and won by two.

Tony Finau is back at Vidanta Vallarta this week, where he won in 2023. He shows up 104th in the FedExCup Fall standings, four spots outside the top 100. On this day in 2018 he took a three-shot lead into Sunday in Shanghai, shot 71, and still lost. Xander birdied his last two to catch him, then beat him on the first playoff hole.

Internet Invitational, Episode 1: Luke Kwon slept in a tent on the first tee. Finch leads Ruffels by a point, and Bryan has Dalke in a hole. Alternate shot Thursday, then 32 go home. @Internetinvite #InternetInvitational

Two back with four to play, Ben An hit driver off the deck with water left on 15, birdied three of his last four, then beat Tom Kim in a playoff. First DP World Tour win in nine years, at home in Korea. On this day in 2024 at the Genesis Championship. Katsuragawa won it Sunday. Tough act to follow.

Internet Invitational Episode 1 is five hours long and still finds time to send half the field home. Four teams of 16, only two move on. No spoilers: whose team were you riding, Finch, Ruffels, Dalke or Bryan? @Internetinvite

99 PGA Tour starts without a win, then Austin Smotherman wins two straight. Utah, then Bermuda in a Monday playoff after the wind ate Sunday. Hot streak, or did something actually click?

A year ago today Michael Brennan took a sponsor invite to Black Desert and left with the trophy. Third career start, 22 under, four clear. This year's Utah winner, Austin Smotherman, just beat Séamus Power in a Monday playoff in Bermuda. 100 starts for the first win. Three weeks for the second.

21 years ago today, Lucas Glover holed a 35-yard bunker shot on 18 at Disney to beat Tom Pernice Jr. by one. First win of six, a U.S. Open included. This week he opened with a 69 in Bermuda, the island where he won the 2009 Grand Slam by five. Hovering around the cut line. Could use another one of those.

Three guys shot 63 in Bermuda today and somehow the amateur's 72 is the better story. Austin Lemieux, Monday qualifier, first Tour start: beat the defending champ by three. Kohles, Silverman or Walker. Who's still up there Sunday?

4 days until Internet Invitational Season 2. Season 1, Day 1 lunch: Whitney's about to fight Kwon at the buffet, Team Bob's down 8-4, and Jon Gruden stands up. They won the afternoon. Still went home. Who's giving the speech this year?

Minjee Lee is back at the BMW Ladies in Korea this week. On this day in 2023 she won it the hard way: tied with Alison Lee at -16, birdie on the first playoff hole. Seven years after losing a playoff in Korea, she finally got one there.

Mario Lemieux's kid Monday-qualified for a PGA Tour event by shooting 66. His dad's number. You'd get laughed out of a writers' room for that. Amateur, played college hockey at ASU, tees it up in Bermuda tomorrow. Makes the cut or no?

5 days until Internet Invitational Season 2. Season 1's final: Ryan Whitney asks Big Mo about his rangefinder, Mo speedwalks to his cart, and the video review can't prove a thing. Season 2 should just check every rangefinder on the first tee.
