The background isn't always supposed to be the most interesting part of your design.
Its job is often to support the subject, not compete with it.

Before you order a flyer, send your designer these 5 things:
1. Your text
2. Your logo
3. Your photos or images
4. The size you need
5. Your deadline
That way the designer doesn't have to guess, so the first draft will usually be much closer to what you want.
