Today marks 25 years since Ron Williamson and Dennis Fritz were exonerated after spending 11 years in prison for a crime they didn’t commit.
In 1988, Ron and Dennis were convicted of the murder of a young woman in Pontotoc County, Oklahoma. Ron, a former amateur baseball player, and Dennis were arrested five years after the attack based on unreliable forensic evidence and false jailhouse testimony. Ron was sent to death row and Dennis was sentenced to life in prison.
The two men were finally exonerated by DNA in 1999. Ron sadly passed away in 2004 in an Oklahoma nursing home, surrounded by his family. He continues to be missed and his memory is always with us.
Later, Dennis and Ron’s case became the subject for Innocence Project Board Member @johngrisham's first nonfiction book, The Innocent Man: Murder and Injustice in a Small Town, which was published in 2006 and was a bestseller.
