Models aren’t what’s holding voice AI back, says @jordan_dearsley. Distribution is.
The @Vapi_AI CEO joins @deepgramscott to dig into that, plus what devs are still struggling to build with voice.

“That’s fine.”
Agreement? Frustration? Text alone can't tell you.
Tone, pauses, and history all change what users mean. At #DeepgramSpeak (Oct. 29, SF), we’re digging into how voice agents can keep up.

Want a peek of what’s to come at #DeepgramSpeak? @covaldev’s @bnicholehopkins and @kwindla of @trydaily caught up ahead of the big day to chat about what it’ll take to build better voice agents.

Deepgram is hosting a voice agents developer conference in San Francisco on October 29th. I'm speaking at the conference, we have some fun Pipecat announcements to make, and lots of friends are either attending, or speaking, or both.
I figured this was an opportunity to record some conversations with people in the voice AI ecosystem about what they're interested in right now, what they're talking about at Speak, and what's new since we last caught up.
@bnicholehopkins, founder of @covaldev, has been building simulation and testing tools for voice agents since 2024. Before Coval, Brooke worked on simulation tooling at Waymo.
Brooke and I riffed about how deployments of enterprise voice AI are growing incredibly fast right now, how we think about building with open source components and models, applying systems engineering principles to agentic AI development, and aiming for "self-improving agent loops."
I've been experimenting with prompting Opus to create motion graphics and video effects. A discerning 11-year old of my acquaintance called the result, here, "kind of cringe." But I kind of like it. See what you think. :-)
The best voice AI makes moves during the conversation. At #DeepgramSpeak, @ping_wu, CEO of Speak ‘26 sponsor @cresta, and our own @deepgramscott will talk about how agents can use context to take action during live calls. Register and get $500 in Deepgram credits when you attend: deepgram.com/speak
Building with voice AI? Clear your calendar for October 29. Speakers from @covaldev, @Vapi_AI, @Qualcomm, and @trydaily are coming to SF to talk agent deployment, context, and what’s next for voice AI. deepgram.com/speak#registrat…
Drive-thru noise. Dinner-rush phone lines. Orders full of modifiers. Restaurants are a tough test for voice AI.
At #Speak26 on Oct. 29, @toasttab’s Steve Brewer will share how Toast is approaching voice and AI agents.

I'll be at Deepgram Speak on October 29th with 500 or so new and old friends who build voice AI agents and applications. As mini embedded Pipecat and I were just discussing, I'm really excited about Deepgram Speak.
We're working on some very fun Pipecat stuff for the conference. If you're interested in models for realtime AI, building production voice agents, or what the future holds for voice and AI-native software, please join us in San Francisco.
Whether you’re running voice AI across devices or on the cloud, successful deployment depends on a custom solution. Join us in SF on 10/29 to hear leaders from @awscloud, @Qualcomm, and @NVIDIA talk about what’s next for voice AI ubiquity. Register here: deepgram.com/speak
Manual note-taking meets real-time transcription so you don’t miss a thing. The @Flowtica_AI Scribe pen uses Deepgram to create contextualized, searchable conversations. Learn more: deepgram.com/customers/flowt…
Supporting a language isn’t the same as supporting medicine in that language.
Nova-3 Medical now transcribes clinical speech in 10 languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Russian, Hindi, and Japanese.

Three weeks until Deepgram Speak.
On October 29, 500 developers, researchers, and technical leaders are coming together in San Francisco to build, test, and push voice AI forward.
Hear from leaders across @ToastTab, @cresta, @Qualcomm, @LangChain, @doximity, @covaldev, @twilio, and @Vapi_AI on what it takes to build voice AI for the real world, from latency and interruptions to multilingual agents, contact centers, and production scale.
And so you can put it all into practice, everyone who registers with a business email and attends will get $500 in Deepgram credits.

"Four years is enough time to earn a full bachelor's degree. It's an entire presidential term. It's the time an athlete gets to train from one Olympic Games to the next. In other words, four years is a long time.
And in a place like Silicon Valley, where it's normal to switch companies every year or so, staying anywhere that long gets noticed. People ask about it. Recruiters ask about it. My friends definitely ask about it. "You're still at Deepgram?"
Yes, I am. So here's why I've stayed."
- Jose Nicholas Francisco, Deepgram
As voice AI models keep getting better, your stack should make it easy to keep up. Here’s @kwindla on swapping models in @pipecat_ai, and why Deepgram’s Flux TTS is “a really, really amazing step forward.” Watch the full webinar: bit.ly/4hHfCFk
As AI agents get more capable, safety becomes a systems problem. What can they access, do, and decide?
Our CEO @deepgramscott joined @mishindan1 and @gsivulka on @jason’s @ThisWeeknAI to talk about guardrails and the infrastructure behind useful AI. youtube.com/watch?v=FnVyEYKc…
Voice AI is growing because builders keep pushing it forward, and we believe in backing teams early.
On top of the Deepgram Startup Program, we're proud to announce that we're a launch partner in @livekit's Startup Program. Pre-Series A teams get $1,000 in Deepgram credits and it works natively through LiveKit Inference.
Ready from your first line of code and as you scale.
Can't wait to see what you build: livekit.com/startups

Some of the biggest Voice AI opportunities live in places where the cloud isn’t always an option.
That’s why Deepgram is excited to support @VAST_Data's launch of DataEnclave – bringing leading AI models into customer-controlled infrastructure while helping protect sensitive data and models in use.
Deepgram already supports self-hosted Voice AI for enterprises that need greater control over where their workloads run. With VAST DataEnclave, those teams have another path to put real-time Voice AI to work in the environments that matter most.
Because the best AI infrastructure meets enterprises where they are.
