Ngl. He did NOT need to be an interesting antagonist. He’s Gotham crime boss #457. He served his purpose.

Clayface isn’t just unlike any DC film we’ve gotten before. It’s unlike any comic book movie we’ve ever gotten and the best DC film to come out of DC Studios since James Gunn and Peter Safran took charge.
This is a villain story down to its core, with James Watkins showcasing the dark, brutal, gritty, and gory side of Gotham and the DCU. Tom Rhys Harrie brings so much charm to the role of Matt Hagen while also showcasing the menacing, villainous half that devours him.
It feels like a Gotham crime story to its core with its blend of horror, romance, and suspense. If DC Studios can continue producing more films of this quality, then we’re in for a ride.

Matt Reeves on casting Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen in ‘CLAYFACE’ 🫠
“There was just something that really grabbed us right from the very beginning with Tom—he had an incredible, interesting intensity. You could see him digging into the darkness of this character, but also you had a kind of empathy for him. So again, that’s the razor’s edge in this kind of story. On the one hand, you want to be frightened of him, but you also want to understand him at a deeper level, and Tom was so magnetic right from the beginning. He just felt so arresting and different, and we thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be exciting to bring someone and introduce him to the world in this way through this character?’ Obviously, he’s done other work, but our feeling is that people are going to know Tom really for what he does here, and his work is incredible.”

“We were texting each other just a few weeks ago - figuring out when we could meet for lunch. I don't know if that lunch would have changed his future... But I do know that I loved him.”
