A year ago today we eagerly awaited a visit from my brother-in-law. We wanted to give him his birthday gifts. He cancelled the visit and the next day we found out he took his life.
For weeks those gifts sat in our basement, a painful and tangible reminder of what was lost. 1/7

Every time you hear a homeless person died, especially in the winter, fight the urge to say “we need more homeless shelters” and say housing is a human right. Our society changes *only when* our public policies seek systemic changes, instead of settling for temporary solutions.
