I am anguished to see what Indian tennis has come to. When a country stops producing champions, we must have the courage to look beyond performance and examine the system. Corruption, favouritism and nepotism can destroy sporting institutions from within.
I recall my own days as a junior tennis player representing Punjab. I too was impacted by nepotism. It was an early lesson in how talent and hard work do not always receive their due in an unfair system.
That experience made me determined not to depend entirely on sport for my future. But I did not give up tennis. I continued playing, travelling with my books so that I would not miss examinations when I returned from tournaments.
It meant doing twice the work — pursuing sporting ambitions while protecting my academic future.
That extra effort paid off.
Looking back, perhaps the greatest victory was not just what I achieved on the tennis court, but the determination to never allow circumstances or an unfair system to decide the boundaries of my future.
India needs to restore merit, transparency and accountability in sports administration. Young talent must not have to fight the system before it gets an opportunity to compete.
A nation cannot produce champions by rewarding connections over competence. It must create a system where talent gets a fair court to play on.
And corruption gets nipped early by timely interventions. before it damages.
