It really seems like an error for a union to weaponise rankings like this. The telos of the ranking - competitive, market-oriented, prestige-hungry - is precisely what's destroying UK universities. There's no possible alignment here, however tactical or temporary.
'... UCU said recent changes including the loss of "dozens of experienced staff" had resulted in The University of Sheffield dropping out of the top 100 in global league tables.'
Hmm... So it wasn't just external sectoral factors beyond our control?

Dame commander of the order of the British empire here to tell you that your historical narrative is problematic. 🤣
Increasingly, the fascist atmosphere of this place feels less about an explicit politics, and more how the algorithm revels in a display of everyday violence, how it prioritizes the least kind sentiment on every topic, the air of indifference to, even pleasure in, suffering, &c.
So the British Government is now basically run by some lad from Macroom. What stage of decolonisation is this?
So many americans having opinions about not getting S****y R****y without once considering that, perhaps, they are not the audience.
Oh man, whatever the historical crimes of the british nation, they don't deserve this theguardian.com/lifeandstyle…
Cork pro tip: if your kid waves at the excellent music librarians in the city library, you get one of these. 😍
Friends, gently, we need to stop promoting university funding by talking about 'competitiveness' or 'maintain[ing] wealth.' Our students deserve a decent education, where staff have the time to give them and their work the attention it deserves. That's enough!
I find this discourse baffling. The boring reality is that the (bad) status quo is working out well for significant amounts of people, and they'll keep voting for it. It's not some mysterious lack of vision or self loathing. Some people just like what FFG are offering.
Anyway, I think people on the left in Ireland would be better off trying to understand the actual affirmative appeal of continuity FFG, rather than attributing their consistently good polling to some kind of mysterious national inability to do/see better.
