How can Africa build greater trust in global finance?

Two weeks ago, the Africa Credit Rating Agency @AfCRA_Official officially launched in Mauritius.
Its establishment marks an important step towards reshaping how African credit risk is assessed and priced, with an opportunity to bring a deeper understanding of African economies into global financial markets.
But why is this shift so important?
Our CEO @hmryder explores this in her recent commentary on @ProSyn . 🧵
project-syndicate.org/commen…
These methodological questions have real financial consequences.
Research cited in @hmryder's analysis estimates that African countries could save up to $74.5 billion if their credit risk were priced more accurately.
When assessments fail to capture economic realities, the implications extend to borrowing costs, investment and development financing.
With AfCRA now established, the focus turns to its contribution to a more accurate and informed assessment of African credit risk.
Through transparent methodologies and a deeper understanding of African economies, the agency has an opportunity to strengthen investor confidence and contribute to fairer borrowing costs across the continent.
Our CEO @hmryder explores this in her @ProSyn commentary, "Rating Africa on Its Own Terms"

On #AfricaHumanRightsDay, we reflect on a right recognised in the African Charter: the right to development.
But how can African countries fully exercise this right without a stronger voice in global decision-making?
Our infographic, “Why The UN Must Shift Decision-Making to Africa,” examines inequalities in UN leadership and representation, and the case for shifting decision-making power to Africa.

10 years ago the prevailing narrative on #debt was: “it’s a problem and borrowers/new lenders need supervision”. Today, a correction is unfolding - the problem is being understood as “debt can be helpful, but the architecture is unjust.” It’s becoming a shared, structural issue.

A vision delivered. A promise honoured. 🌍
The historic launch of the African Credit Rating Agency (@AfCRA_Official) marks a new chapter in Africa’s pursuit of financial sovereignty and economic transformation.
I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the Government and people of Mauritius, @_AfricanUnion Member States, our partners, stakeholders and the @APRMorg team, past and present, whose dedication and collective efforts have turned this African vision into reality.
This is not the end of our journey, but the beginning of a new chapter for Africa.
Thank you for believing in Africa’s vision. Africa’s time is now!

How do Chinese institutions assess African risk, and what does it mean for access to finance?
On the sidelines of the 2026 IMF–World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok, our CEO, @hmryder , and CCXI’s Zhang Tingting had a fireside chat on African risk assessment, China–Africa financial cooperation and RMB financing.
“Africa’s long-term development ambitions rest on more than financing from the international financial system alone.
For over three decades, a parallel vision has been taking shape: a set of African-owned, African-led institutions designed to give the continent its own investment bank, monetary fund, capital markets network, and eventually a central bank and single currency.”
