🇬🇧 In 1949, Simon, a black-and-white cat aboard HMS Amethyst, was wounded when the British warship came under fire on China’s Yangtze River. Despite shrapnel injuries and burns, Simon continued catching rats that threatened the stranded crew’s limited food supplies. He also comforted wounded sailors. His bravery earned him the PDSA Dickin Medal, making him the only cat ever to receive the honour. Sadly, Simon died in quarantine on November 28, 1949, before receiving his medal in person. He was buried with naval honours.
