There is no god. Life is a meaningless exercise of random chance. Justice, fairness, and free will are illusions our primitive ape brains invented to give a sense of order. Our existence is just suffering and decay. Pain. #LetsGoOilers #StanleyCup

News reports: EU will not be offering Canada affiliate membership, with member states split on the issue. Mark Carney: “If I may”
Canada and the EU are working towards the deepest possible partnership — short of full membership — with Canada becoming the European Union’s first Associate Member. Today in Montréal, we took a major step forward with more than twenty new measures that will create greater affordability, opportunity, and sovereignty on both sides of the Atlantic. pm.gc.ca/en/news/news-releas…

People are clowning on this for obvious reasons but the truly important thing to remember is how batshit crazy the legal drinking age is there. We must liberate Americans of their tyrannical, anti-liberty government. 21? What kind of probation era evangelical nonsense is that?

Alex Formenton plays the boards the same way all the “unengaged” “soft”“perimeter” skill players do without any of the point production. Many of you ran a perennial 50-60 point Jordan Eberle out of town for less. And Eberle’s behaviour at the World Juniors was heroic 🐸☕️

Fun fact: Notre Dame struggled to schedule anyone because the Western Conference / Big Ten spread false rumours to crooked sportswriters about the ethics of the program which made them toxic to associate with. By 1909 the conference prohibited their schools from playing ND altogether and denied the Irish’s application to join the conference. One of many instances where the conference not only denied ND but actively tried to starve its athletic department. Things would change for Notre Dame when an East Coast powerhouse gave them a shot: Army West Point.
121 years ago today, Notre Dame defeated the American College of Medicine and Surgery (American Medical) by a score of 142–0 at Cartier Field. Notre Dame scored 27 touchdowns in just 33 minutes of total play time.

1. Canada has a G7 economy 2. Canada has an AAA sovereign rating from S&P (only other G7 country with an AAA rating is Germany) 3. Canada's net debt is approx half that of the US or France 4. Canada's borrowing costs are (as a result) lower than the US, UK, France, etc 5. Canada has plans to reach 4% GDP defense spending (by NATO definition) by 2030 and 5% by 2035 6. Canadian defense spending has increased and is increasing rapidly which is why Canada is now tied with Italy and Poland for the 4th largest defense budget of US allies in NATO only behind Germany, the UK and France 7. Due to its strong fiscal capacity, and the very weak fiscal capacity of France, Canada is projected to match or even slightly surpass French defense spending within the next 4-5 years in absolute terms, which would make it the 3rd largest defense spender in non American NATO only behind Germany and the UK 8. There is broad support in Canada for higher defense spending due to (1) Russia's invasion of Ukraine, (2) growing threats from China, (3) belligerent, hostile behavior from Trump, and (4) the ability to do so without severe fiscal tradeoffs due to the fiscal capacity mentioned above. 9. It is not hard for a G7 country with a high GDP per capita and robust fiscal capacity and a rapidly rising defense budget to fund an air force that operates 2 types of fighters. In fact many countries with comparable levels of fiscal capacity operate or will soon operate *three* different types of combat aircraft. And many countries that are much weaker than Canada fiscally operate 2 or more in a mixed fleet. 10. If Canada pursues a mixed fleet then its Gripens would be built *in Canada* and even more Gripens would be built in Canada for 3rd country export (Saab is open about seeking partner industrial capacity for Gripen production). So the defense industrial, economic and labor benefits would be substantial, which is why only looking at the literal cost of the aircraft is quite myopic. 11. Canada is and long has been a country that prioritizes air and naval power for obvious reasons. Even more so today and in the future than in the world war or cold war period (due to changes in defense technology and rise of Sino-Russian threat). So yes lots of $ will be available for fighter jets, ASW aircraft, attack subs and destroyers. Hence acquisition of 15 river class destroyers, 12 german-norwegian 212CD SSKs, 14+ American P8s, and a large # of fighters. Airpower is a core pillar of Canadian national security. It will be funded as such.
I’m pretty confident that the assumption that 2 small fleets of dissimilar aircraft are an inefficient use of funds that is unlikely to be adequately funded by future Canadian governments anyway will not be upended by smart weapons.

"Railroad Commissioner" lmao It's insane and outright unhealthy how many positions Americans have to vote for. One leading theory for the mass over-incarceration in the US is the elections of District Attorneys, which politically incentivizes "tough on crime" overzealousness.

For the uninitiated, the USA has one of the highest incarceration rates in the entire world. Way ahead of China, Russia, and other dictatorships. Not only is this a major strain on resources, it is detrimental to communities and to the individuals re-integrating afterwards.

I like Quebec. I understand why some Canadians don’t, and there’s nobody but Quebec’s government to blame for the reputation they have. The arrogance. The entitlement to host. You’re just 1 of 10 provinces in this great country. An important province, but not the most important.

Your party won with just 28% of the vote in an era of historical low support for sovereignty. Who the hell do you think you are 😂 Ontario is twice as important as Quebec and has 1/10th of the ego.

We’re eventually going to need to a) ban AI or b) introduce a universal basic income of some kind. If companies save absurd amounts by eliminating their labour costs, they will be expected to pay absurd taxes to fund UBI. Those who employ humans get a different tax rate.
BREAKING: Microsoft, $MSFT, is offering buyouts to 60,000 workers as part of the company’s efforts to cut costs amid AI adoption, per Bloomberg. Personnel on select teams in the US, Canada, India, and the UK at a vice president level and below will be eligible. This reflects ~27% of Microsoft's total workforce.

It’s not even that wild. If Microsoft eliminated labour costs that’s like 1/3 of their costs and frees up like 60 billion for them. There is a future where AI ends scarcity. We should be at least planning for that transition. Might be ugly before it gets good, unfortunately.
