This also goes for TF2 since its artstyle directly draws from 20th century artists who worked a lot with stuff like advertising where you'd see most this kind of thing. There is a sense that exaggerating these effects is more interesting than pure imitation

A lot of Valve's 2000's games have what I consider "tasteful realism" where you can tell it's supposed to capture a lot of detail and phenomena but it's all done with grace and style and has aged next to nothing after 2 decades
