I posed for Egon Schiele on a Gynaecological Ward thewritelaunch.com/2026/02/s… My skin is the sombre grey of a cadaver, speckled with purple veins — a carbon copy of Schiele’s emaciated mother, Like a tipped palette cup, I spew green bile. Mum’s baby-bump massages are synchronised with the chorus of her song. Think of a name. Spare me your dose of laughing gas, mum. So, breaths laboured she soothes a patient with frenzied prayers instead of analgesics. Papa God, you glued Michal’s womb shut. And blessed Hannah who fasted and prayed. Bless my daughter with a son. Schiele unmasks mum’s God — a habit’s hood falls off a face God is colluding with a sinister monk, stealthily waiting to snatch my foetus. The truth is a long epidural needle entering my spine. And I’m pregnant with Schiele’s fear of dying — in the first trimester of a foetus’s life. Mum says a childless Krio woman wears that shame like a flamboyant head wrap. And at my age, I am a brittle oil painting. That year’s theme was Africa. 😍 Book Club ~~~~~~~~~ (Published by Fourth Estate, 2014) Question: Do You Read/Write Essays? Today's book is an essay of 52 pages that invites us to challenge the definition of emasculation. Successful women should not make African men feel emasculated or intimidated. If a lady is richer than you, would you chat her up? Nah. I’m not addressing so-called Yahoo boys. The other day a guy messaged me on Facebook saying: Are you looking marriage? Coming to Enugu. Please do not dismiss feminists as your usual stereotypes. Fourteen-year-old Okoloma labelled young Chimamanda a feminist because she was feisty. And that’s the problem, an argumentative in-your-face female pushing for gender equality is often labelled a feminist, like it’s a cuss word. When Chimamanda was promoting her 2003 novel: Purple Hibiscus, a man apparently told her, people were beginning to see the author as a feminist. That carried a sexist connotation: in Nigeria back then, feminists were seen as women who couldn’t find husbands. On page 29, Chimamanda relays the story of ‘a Nigerian woman who decided to sell her house because she didn’t want to intimidate a man who might want to marry her.’ Let me quote Chimamanda’s words: ‘[t]he reality is more difficult, more complex…The language of marriage is often a language of ownership, not a language of partnership.’ (Page 30).
