Another cartoon abstract: The algal symbiont ‘characters’ tracked for almost a decade in a population of brain corals through the 2015–16 tropical-Pacific marine heatwave, featuring ‘hard-as-nails’ Durusdinium.

Performances of some symbionts under heat stress depends on the condition of coral hosts, becoming problematic only when corals have had to deal with harsh environmental conditions. doi.org/10.1111/mec.70243
Excited to share my shiny new website. I’ve been meaning to create something that merges academic & creative dalliances for a while…check it out! daisybuzzoni.com

Thanks to @AmandaEBates for her thoughts on how the recent paper from my PhD at @Coralassist_Lab (about the variability of coral heat tolerance among reefs) contributes to thermal biology and conservation more broadly.

📢New Paper Alert📢
🪸Selective breeding enhances tolerance of corals to marine heatwaves
Take-home message:
-Breeding corals for heat tolerance is feasible
-R&D needed to optimise outcomes
-Not a silver bullet solution
-Still need climate action

So grateful to have had the chance to work with this brilliant team at @Coralassist_Lab ….congrats @LiamLachs!!
New research by @LiamLachs and colleagues highlights the importance of species-level spatial complexity in heat tolerance of corals

The first chapter of my dissertation is out! Looking at the spectral sensitivity of benthic community shifts of Hawaiian reefs. This will help us delineate reef communities for targeted restoration efforts in West Hawaiʻi. authors.elsevier.com/a/1ie3o… @ASU_GDCS @asnerlab @baumlab
Excited to share this paper co-authored with great mentors @jrcunning & @coralprof. “The role of background algal symbionts as drivers of shuffling to thermotolerant Symbiodiniaceae following bleaching in three Caribbean coral species”tinyurl.com/3b3h6kpd
We did also find seasonal differences in Cladocopium symbiont density in M. cavernosa and S. siderea, prompting further research into how these differences could inform bleaching predictions in the face of winter warming and extended summer warming.
Incredibly stoked to be able to share this latest episode from the brilliant Ze Frank and Caitlyn Cowry- True Facts about Reef-Building Coral- We thought it about time the crazy world of coral biology was given an NSFW makeover!

Shout out to @coralprof’s coral biology class for opening my eyes to the nutso world of corals! @baumlab woooooo!

2 weeks of science done #kiritimati2023! We have sampled over 500 corals including many of our previously tagged and sampled colonies. Tagging many new corals that have grown since the last El Niño. We are looking at how they and their symbionts change through this #ElNino.

1 week of data collection on #kiritimati following a 4yr hiatus due to Covid. Stoked to see the amount of recovery on the reefs!

Excited to head back to Kiritimati!! While we are 🙏they avoided the worst of Covid, it’s been a long 4 years waiting to get back. Excited to check on the🪸and collect important data on 🪸 resilience!! 💪 See you soon @AR_Atwood! @baumlab
