Jeff Hinton dismissed gradient descent entirely before winning the Nobel Prize for AI. His fear was local minima - valleys in the loss landscape where the model gets stuck forever. For a 1.2 billion parameter LLM like Llama, the landscape has more dimensions than atoms in the observable universe. Getting permanently stuck would require hitting a dead end in every single dimension simultaneously. What gradient descent actually looks like on a real LLM is stranger than anyone expected. Take two random directions through that billion-dimensional space, visualize the loss surface, and watch what happens when training starts - a wormhole opens and the model drops into a low-loss valley that wasn't visible from the starting point. The valley was always nearby in high-dimensional space. It just couldn't be seen in the 2D projection. The same reason every transformer, every diffusion model, and every LLM trained on GPU clusters today converges despite loss landscapes that look completely chaotic from any two-dimensional slice. 23 minutes. Bookmark & watch today. The most honest visualization of how LLMs actually learn.

Cato’s @dr_inserra warns that the FCC has no business policing political polls. Polls are core political speech. Giving government officials power to label polls “fake” risks letting them punish broadcasters for speech they dislike. ow.ly/gjkT51013vZ

The FBI wrote secret rules for when agents may investigate political speech made with AI. The public can’t hold the government to rules it can’t see. Congress should make the FBI release them, writes Cato’s Patrick G. Eddington. ow.ly/ax2E5100XIf

The White House Council of Economic Advisers claims illegal immigrants cost taxpayers $166,716 each. Cato's @David_J_Bier says those estimates aren't credible. They have actually reduced federal, state, and local deficits by $1.7 trillion over 30 years. ow.ly/kNi151015Zf

🚨 BREAKING: Burgum on wind turbines: "We have a report from Hegseth saying they pose a national security threat. An attack on the United States could be launched using a group of drones flying through a wind farm, and they wouldn't be detected until they were spotted because of radar interference."

Hey @Grok, concise, no spin. Of the MILLIONS of Americans projected to lose Medicaid coverage under Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill, how many are UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS? Start with the number.

Chomsky was wrong. Researchers found your brain doesn’t store language the way every textbook since 1957 claims. For decades, the undisputed rule of linguistics, led by Noam Chomsky, was that human language is hierarchical. We were told our brains process language using complex "grammar trees." That we secretly build deep, abstract, mathematical rules in our heads before we speak. This new paper proves that is completely wrong. Researchers at Cornell University analyzed how people actually process and produce language in real time. They found sequences. Linear chunks. When we speak, we aren't calculating deep syntactic rules. We are just predicting the next most logical sequence of words based on the context of the words right before it. We string linear chunks together. If this sounds familiar, it should. This is exactly how Large Language Models like ChatGPT work. For years, critics have dismissed AI as "just a next-token predictor." They said it isn't truly intelligent because it doesn't understand deep grammatical hierarchies like humans do. But this paper suggests humans don't use those hierarchies either. We are just predicting the next chunk. Language isn't a rigid tree of mathematical rules. It's a linear stream of contextual predictions. We thought we were building AI to mimic the complexity of the human brain. It turns out, the human brain was just running a simpler algorithm all along.

“On Feb. 5, 2025, her first day in office, Attorney General Pam Bondi disbanded the FBI’s Foreign Influence Task Force, dismantled the department’s unit pursuing Russian oligarchs’ assets, and narrowed enforcement of the Foreign Agents Registration Act. CISA paused its election security work, abandoned the information sharing center that connected it to state and local election officials, and by mid-2025 had lost more than a third of its workforce. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard gutted the Foreign Malign Influence Center, the State Department closed its office for countering foreign disinformation, and National Security Council working groups on Russian sabotage and disinformation stopped meeting. The next target was the people. In August 2025, Gabbard revoked the security clearances of 37 current and former officials, among them a senior Russia analyst who helped produce the 2017 assessment, citing the “politicization or weaponization of intelligence.” Comey was indicted on Sept. 25, 2025, over his 2020 Senate testimony, five days after Trump publicly demanded his prosecution. A judge dismissed the case, but the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit is currently hearing the department’s appeal. CIA Director John Ratcliffe referred former Director Brennan for prosecution for alleged perjury in his congressional testimony, and Brennan has been subpoenaed to appear at a Florida grand jury examining whether officials who investigated Trump conspired against him. The purge also reached below the senior level, and analysts who worked on the 2017 assessment also had their clearances stripped. The FBI forced out a veteran counterintelligence agent over his ties to an official in the original Russia investigation, and dozens of FBI agents and Justice Department prosecutors were fired or demoted for work investigating Trump or Russia.”

After her captivating performance in the beloved film "Labyrinth," she married the man she had been infatuated with since she was 15 years old In fact, her spouse, the talented actor Paul Bettany, has openly stated that he was completely captivated when he saw Jennifer Connelly on screen in "Labyrinth" when he was younger. His admiration for her (in the most wholesome sense) was so profound that from that moment on, he envisioned her as his future wife Fourteen years later, fate brought them together on the set of 'A Beautiful Mind'. Despite sparks flying between them, they maintained a professional demeanor because they were both involved in other relationships at the time However, the universe had another plan. The tragic events of 9/11 stirred something within Bettany. He immediately wanted to contact Jennifer and ensure her safety. Realizing that she was the first person he thought of in the midst of such disaster, he felt an irresistible urge to express his love for her. After frantically searching for her contact information, he called her and boldly proposed, "I'm in. Let's get married." Responding to her declaration of love, he moved to New York, and the two exchanged vows and embarked on a marital bliss without the conventions of courtship
