57 years ago today, on November 1, 1969, the Beatles' Abbey Road hit No. 1 on the Billboard album chart.
It was their 13th US No. 1 album, and it got there fast. Released in America on October 1, it debuted at No. 178 and reached the top in only its third week, replacing Creedence Clearwater Revival's Green River.
Abbey Road held No. 1 for eight straight weeks until Led Zeppelin II took over on December 27, then traded places with it into the new year. It finished with 11 weeks at No. 1, the last on January 24, 1970.
It was also the last album the Beatles recorded. August 20, 1969 was the final day all four were in the studio together, and Iain Macmillan shot the famous zebra crossing cover outside the studio on August 8.
