“LUCK” IS OFTEN JUST THE INEVITABLE RESULT OF SHEER PERSISTENCE.
I recently came across this thought shared by Dr. @NTFabiano Fabiano X, and it resonated deeply with me.
We often look at someone else's success and casually dismiss it with two words:
“They got lucky!”
But did they?
This is particularly relevant for International Medical Graduates (IMGs) preparing for the USMLE and applying for the Residency Match.
We often hear:
“Oh, that candidate got lucky! They secured an observership at a residency program and eventually matched there.”
But let's examine what that so-called LUCK actually looked like.
Perhaps that candidate:
- Scored 260+ on USMLE Step 2 CK.
- Sent 500 carefully written, personalized emails seeking clinical opportunities, despite repeated rejections and silence.
- Passed USMLE Step 3 to strengthen their application.
- Finally secured an observership after months of persistence.
- Demonstrated exceptional professionalism, clinical knowledge, humility, and dedication during the rotation.
- Left such a strong impression that the Program Director and faculty genuinely believed this candidate would be an asset to their residency program.
And we call THAT luck?
What we see is the successful Match. What we don't see are the sleepless nights, hundreds of unanswered emails, sacrifices, disappointments, and extraordinary persistence behind it.
Of course, luck, privilege, connections, and circumstances do matter. Not everyone begins from the same starting line, and hard work alone cannot guarantee success.
But here's the lesson:
1. Hard work in the RIGHT direction is far more valuable than simply working hard without a strategy.
2. Preparation creates opportunities. Persistence increases your chances of finding them. Excellence helps you make the most of them.
3. Don't dismiss someone else's years of preparation as mere luck just to justify your own lack of effort.
4. Instead of envying someone's opportunity, study the work that made them ready for it.
As the famous saying goes, “Fortune favors the bold.”
To every IMG and USMLE aspirant:
Keep learning. Keep improving. Keep reaching out. Keep knocking on doors.
You cannot control every outcome, but you can control how prepared you are when an opportunity finally arrives.
WHAT THE WORLD CALLS LUCK IS OFTEN YEARS OF HARD WORK THAT NOBODY SAW.

Shubman Gill is a good Batsman but outside India and especially against SENA his performance has been poor
Azhar Ali on Babar Azam: “Yes, his technique needs some corrections, but what he needs even more is mental support.”
A powerful reminder that even world-class players struggle with confidence. Babar needs backing, not constant criticism!
Apas ki baat hai. Doc sahab criticizes Aaqib Javed a lot, valid criticism for sure.
Kia aj ki mulaqat mai koi mufeed mashwaray diye @DrNaumanNiaz apne @AJavedOfficial ko?
I know that Babar Azam didn't have a great Triangular Series and domestic stint but I think he is putting himself out there to improve instead of hiding which shows a positive mindset. I am confident that he will perform well in the upcoming Test Series Against Srilanka
Abid Ali praises Babar Azam for playing domestic cricket and being brave enough to try instead of hiding
I don't think we should encourage discussions about personal lives of cricketers. If Kamran Akmal has some knowledge of any possible issues Babar Azam is facing, he shouldn't have said in a podcast

A striking finding from American Jewish voters!
According to the AP-NORC poll, American Jews view Zohran Mamdani more favorably than Benjamin Netanyahu.
🔹 Mamdani: 44% favorable, 39% unfavorable (+5)
🔹 Netanyahu: 32% favorable, 59% unfavorable (−27)
A powerful reminder that American Jews are not a monolith, and criticism of Netanyahu should never be confused with hostility toward Jewish Americans.
Jewish identity and support for Netanyahu are not the same thing.

A TRIBUTE TO ONE OF MY FAVORITE AMERICAN JOURNALISTS — MEHDI HASAN!
At a time when too many journalists are afraid to challenge power, @mehdirhasan has consistently shown what fearless, independent journalism looks like.
I believe Democrats owe him at least some credit for the political awakening that contributed to their extraordinary midterm victories.
His relentless pursuit of truth, his refusal to bow before powerful interests, and his willingness to ask questions others are too afraid to ask have earned my deepest admiration.
He has never shied away from confronting:
🔷 Islamophobia and the normalization of anti-Muslim hatred.
🔶 The genocide in Gaza, the suffering of Palestinians, and the political leaders who have enabled or defended Israel's actions.
🔷 The failures of Democratic leadership, refusing to give politicians a free pass simply because they belong to one party.
🔷 The influence of powerful lobbying groups on both Democrats and Republicans.
🔷 Government failures, hypocrisy, and abuses of power, regardless of who occupies the White House.
🔶 Human rights violations across the world, including the repression and injustices in my home country, Pakistan.
And perhaps what I admire most is that "he doesn't reserve his toughest questions for his political opponents. He challenges people on his own side, too".
That is what journalism should be.
As someone originally from Pakistan, I often wish my homeland had even one journalist currently living there who could speak with such independence, courage, and fearlessness without bowing to powerful circles.
A journalist's job is not to comfort the powerful. It is to hold them accountable.
Mehdi Hasan reminds us why independent journalism matters, especially when truth becomes politically inconvenient.
I salute your courage, Mehdi Hasan. Keep asking the uncomfortable questions. Keep challenging the powerful. And never let anyone silence your voice.
