The schools have failed our children if they don't know this was the man responsible for founding the American anime fandom. The anime fandom was founded by weirdos and you owe them your gratitude.
It actually went more like this:

In recent times anime has become more mainstream. To claim it has been long since perceived as a respected hobby however ignores the historical context that anime fans were frequently viewed in a less than favourable light, just for enjoying anime.
