I bought a few #paniniblockchain basketball packs a couple weeks back to check it out. It’s not for me, and I don’t think it’s going to be for most long term.
But ... most sports digital collectible markets will not be winner take all, they’ll be caught between ‘winner takes some’ and ‘winner takes most.’ So there’s room for everyone to collect what interests them - choice is good.
Here's what's on my mind:
1. We do not need more archives.
The ‘experience bar’ for digital collectibles is higher than cardboard. Valuable collectibles can tell stories. Collecting a player or team or play type can create a bespoke historical chronology that can be *experienced* by others. This only works well if the collectibles are worth experiencing. Cardboard is not a bespoke experience, it’s a bespoke archive. Similarly, a digital collectible largely reduced to artificial player imagery is an archival object at best. We do not need more archives.
2. Video matters.
The ‘experience bar’ for digital collectibles will change over time. I’m sure I’m not creative enough to imagine what the gold standard for digital collectible might be 5 years from now – but it won’t be what it is today. What we collect today will be torn apart, built upon, transformed. The raw assets inside today's collectible are what matters. Video + imagery will always be greater than imagery.
3. The collector matters.
Every digital collectible, if built upon a quality blockchain that adheres to the modern platform principles of auditable, verifiable specifications has embedded meta data history. Someday, some “Kemba Walker” will collect. I want to own the collectible he once held in his collection. I want to trace the journey of my collectibles, from minting, to initial ownership, to all those who come after me. And I want to be able to prove it.
4. The ecosystem matters.
Closed collectible ecosystems will languish at the hands of open innovation. This might be the most inarguable point in here. Collectors are going to demand innovation and expansion. Similar to Apple outsourcing the majority of the iPhone’s features to the app ecosystem, the most important digital collectible platforms are likely to focus on high quality, exclusive and expansive licensing, and public blockchain technology and outsource lots of 'feature' development to third party ecosystems.
There will be collectible characteristics that matter to other people that don’t matter to me. That's great, I hope I learn something. For example, I don’t care about the Panini or Topps brand. I believe they add near zero long term value in an open digital world. But I'm sure others will disagree.
I’ll sell off my handful of Panini moments when I get around to it, I’m glad its for others, but it’s not for me.
I'll keep collecting @NBATopShot because I believe both the collectible itself and the technology platform are far superior. I think those two things are better foundational elements "to get to 100k real collectors" -- which no platform currently boasts.
(now people can begin screaming at me that Topshot once minted too many moments and evolves its ruls to haphazardly - yep, I agree, and they're still the best collectible).
