Meta just cut off third-party access to Facebook Groups, killing a bunch of companies in the process.
The founder of one company, "Post My Party" said “I will lose seven years of work and over 10,000 customers. It's a multimillion-dollar loss".
Platform risk is very real
Other examples of platform risk just off the top of my head:
🔴 Reddit changes their API pricing, kills tons of third party apps. One, Apollo, was over 9 years old and had 1.5 million active users.
🔴 Shopify changes their terms of service banning public checkout apps. One such app, "Checkout X", was doing 600k MRR before getting shut down by this change.
🔴 Tw*tter changes their API pricing, charging 42k a month, kills loads of third party apps
🔴 Facebook changes their news algo, kills a company called LittleThings that was in the process of selling for 100 million dollars. Deal falls through, company closes a few months later.
