I know that I am mortal, brief is my time. But when I gaze above at the countless stars swirling in the heavens, my feet no longer touch the earth. Soaring aloft, at the table of Zeus I feast on fine ambrosia.

Writing this in my personal capacity, but I have been flying these types of aircraft for more than 20 years, with over 8,000 hours, and have reasonable familiarity with how the charter world operates. I feel compelled to post after seeing commentary about the Lear 60 crash, from missile strikes to DEI to critiquing this poor woman’s final radio calls. That last part is what I find most troubling. She was the second-in-command (SIC), and while she was empowered to point out mistakes as part of good crew resource management, she was doing her job, communicating with ATC right to the end in a terrifying situation. She likely knew before many of those calls that she was going to die. I have heard final calls from friends, from military pilots with thousands of hours in fighter aircraft, and they are just as heartbreaking because they know the end is approaching. I understand the public interest given the footage and audio. But you do not know the aircraft’s maintenance history, whether there was a structural failure, if any failure was induced by turbulence, overspeed, or overcontrol, or everything happening in that cockpit. I am sure weather will be part of the investigation, but beyond that, it is speculation. The charter industry routinely hires commercial pilots very early in their careers to gain experience alongside an ATP-qualified captain before they move up to the airlines. She would still have the appropriate training, qualifications, and checkouts by an FAA examiner or designee. Let people investigate, learn, and share the facts. Be respectful to those who perished and the families who carry their memories. God bless them and their loved ones.

Jostein now: "umm plz dont be mean to be I am merely a curious academic." Jostein literally two days ago:
I’ve deleted all my recent posts about Mao. I started receiving direct threats and hate mail — the latter for the first time — and it’s simply not worth having those posts up there when that becomes a risk to my own safety. I also realised that the discussion and debate did not move in a productive direction. My aim was to highlight the complexity of Mao’s legacy in the hope that more people would try to develop a more nuanced understanding of him. I’m not sure if that was achieved. I’m definitely happy to talk about and share my views on Mao — but perhaps not on this platform at this particular moment. If you’re a journalist and want to chat, I’m happy to talk.

In this abbey in France, nuns have been restoring old books for over 70 years. The Benedictine sisters of Maumont Abbey run a full workshop and their craft is bookbinding, gilding and restoration. Centuries-old books arrive damaged, torn and crumbling, and they restore them all by hand to last another hundred years.

Excellent piece here from @CTVKitchener about the recount for the second Waterloo Catholic Trustee. I can’t imagine what both candidates are feeling. Good summary of the wild “typo” that reported 426 votes for Stanley but certified 274 the next day. ctvnews.ca/kitchener/article…

This is wild to see - a tie for second place. Remember this the next time someone grumbles that their vote “won’t matter”. Fortunately nothing to worry about for my wife Linda Cuff, the clear winner in first. Any expert on municipal recounts here? cbc.ca/news/canada/kitchener…

Not reported here by CBC: seems this tie is after a change in the reported results for the Township of Woolwich overnight affecting three candidates, including 2 WCDSB candidates. Did staff in Woolwich forget how to count by dozens - literally dozens! - of votes? @CTVKitchener

Congratulations to Linda Cuff @LCuffKW who was Re-Elected tonight in first place (by a wide margin!) by the wonderful people of Waterloo, Wellesley and Woolwich as Catholic School Trustee! I know how hard you worked during this campaign. You deserve this, Linda! @CTVKitchener

I think this take held up pretty well.
If this trend holds/ accelerates then it will be a case study in electoral polisci for years to come. Especially worrying is the short election. Eby doesn’t have much time to turn this around if the public mood turns sour. Doesn’t help that Eby has the charisma of a lobster.

The NDP isn't even trying to campaign on their record anymore they're just looking at green voters like this
David Eby once again appeals to Green voters to vote NDP, saying they could decide the election. #bcpoli

It goes without saying that having loving grandparents in a child’s life is an incredibly positive thing to be cherished and not something to be campaigned against.

This transcends politics and marketing. This video achieves the ethereal heights of performance art. Its creators truly know not what they have made. Hang it in the Louvre.
🇮🇪 The Irish state has published an advert discouraging grandparents from hugging their grandchildren, as part of a campaign designed to promote "consent".

I asked my paper about this but it has no recollection of the trip. Clearly was visiting the Guinness brewery and didn’t think to invite me too. And after all I’ve done for it.
