Over 10,000 cases of Bundibugyo virus disease have now been reported in the DRC, a sobering indication of the toll this outbreak has taken on families and communities.
Yet there are reasons for hope. More than 2,600 people have recovered. New vaccine and treatment candidates for Bundibugyo virus are advancing through clinical trials, while laboratory testing, treatment capacity, infection prevention and control, community engagement, and surveillance continue to strengthen.
Our teams are on the ground, working side by side with the government and partners to stop transmission and save lives. With sustained commitment, community trust and solidarity, and safe access to affected communities, this outbreak can be brought to an end.

Reducing costs alone is not reform. We cannot transfer responsibilities to governments and communities without ensuring they have the capacity, resources and accountability to sustain them. We must not dismantle what works before something stronger is in place.
A poorly managed @UNAIDS transition could revert decades of hard-won gains. We must not allow that to happen.

The Working Group has also given us a clear destination: country functions increasingly integrated into national systems and community-led institutions.
That is building capacity for sustainable HIV responses. This is fully consistent with #UN80.
A transformed United Nations must measure its success not by the structures it preserves or abolishes, but by the impact we deliver for people.

Today, the UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board (PCB) holds a special session to consider the future of the UNAIDS Joint Programme, including a roadmap for its further transition and integration into the UN system and beyond.
As the Joint Programme evolves, its role in coordinating the HIV response, providing technical expertise, ensuring accountability and amplifying community leadership remains vital to ending AIDS.

At the UNAIDS PCB Special Session, Executive Director @Winnie_Byanyima reminded the Board that the UNAIDS Joint Programme’s transformation must deliver for people: ensuring access to HIV treatment and prevention, empowering community-led organizations, and building sustainable national responses.
“The Joint Programme’s transformation must serve that larger transformation, not the other way around.”
The UNAIDS Joint Programme brings together the Secretariat and its UN Cosponsors to support governments, share resources and work with communities to deliver HIV programmes.
Speaking at today’s UNAIDS PCB Special Session, Executive Director @Winnie_Byanyima highlighted examples of this collaboration, from regional efforts in the Pacific and Latin America to HIV prevention programmes in South Africa and Uganda.
