(1/5) Relevant podcast/article from Quanta and sneak peak at the culmination of my PhD research (soon in @NatureEcoEvo 🤞). We use 'evolution machine' robots I helped develop to Monte Carlo sample genomic solution space
From our podcast: The mathematical concept of algorithmic complexity seemed inapplicable in the real world. But scientists are now using it to analyze networks and push their evolution toward optimal solutions. quantamagazine.org/tag/podca…

Sometimes I am reading about an interesting mathematical topic and my brain is exploding with the pleasure of new ideas, then I am confronted with the fact that I still can’t remember which is “concave” and which is “convex” and I am sad.

Excited to be part of another Comic-Con panel! ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - The Stories and Science of Mutants, Androids, Space Travel and Aliens.” Bummer it’s virtual this year instead of irl but at least it means overall viewership will probably be higher. comiccon2020.sched.com/event…

#ThrowbackThursday to that time I got 92 cans of corn for $0 thanks to poor electronic coupon programming by @vons - a weekly sale stacked with a personalized deal and made corn free as long as I bought at least 4 cans. Truly my proudest moment. Took me >1 year to finish it all

Who else is excited to see @francesarnold @ucsd this week?

Fascinating talk yesterday by Sir Roger Penrose and @StuartHameroff on consciousness. Potential mechanism being coherent quantum vibrations in neuronal microtubules; damped by anesthesia & amplified by psychedelics. Can't say I'm fully sold yet but sure learned a lot.

My aunt & uncle got to meet the man, the myth, the legend: Alex Caruso. After being in his presence for 5 minutes my uncle regrew all his hair and my aunt won the lottery. Truly the 🐐 and deserving of all-star status #Lakers

Finally ran into this woman again! Very hard to contact with no phone or address (pic showing medical brace from assault). She's been sleeping at @McDonalds but is getting kicked out. Other than a @gofundme is there some way to get her assistance? @Decodehomeless @invisiblepeople
(1/5) I've had long discussions this week with a sweet lady (temporarily homeless) who was a recent victim of assault. She's in a lot of pain and so stressed & anxious that she's hesitant to go to more doctors for the help she needs

This is so crazy. Take out the queen, and workers ant fight, with the winner *transforming* into a queen, gaining additional lifespan. Using scRNA-seq, authors show these "queens" have more glia, suggesting that that helps increase brain health to enable longer lifespan.
Our single-cell ant brain paper is up on @biorxivpreprint. It's the first single-cell study in a social insect brain, and we're really excited about it! biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/… (1/3)

Me, my @UCSanDiego professor Bernhard Palsson, & @Genomatica CEO Christophe Schilling - big shoes to fill when you get your PhD from @ucsd_sbrg! Shot from last week's @UCSDJacobs award ceremony for new @theNAEng inductees Mary Baker, Kimberly Prather, & Jeff Lievense.

Looking for advice: Spoke to a PhD student a few days ago who had some horrible stories of bullying by their supervisor. The student has complained to HoD and graduate tutor but was brushed off. Is there anything I can do to help?

Heard about recent claims of a new 5th force of nature? Ever wondered what the hell quantum physics is and how humans came up with it? I do my best to explain in the latest @FactionScience episode (warning: mildly NSFW) starting ~12 minutes in: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas…

Newly published great work by my labmate; pretty surprising that with the 1,000s of genes involved in bacterial growth only a few dozen groupings are independently regulated. Already seeing great use in interpreting evolved mutation purposes. Exciting to see future applications!

Been mostly offline so wanted to clear up some matters: -Experts I talked to thoroughly discredit the no-dark-energy claim (see: journals.aps.org/prl/abstrac…) -Big red flags w/ the team alleging a fifth force/new boson quantamagazine.org/new-boson… -The Feynman thing is just complicated

(1/7) Latest @rufgrisc @WonderyMedia @NextBigIdeaClub episode 'Perception' (podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas…) is the best one yet - I'm now persuaded to become a Club member. Lol and to look into @LeeJeans 'body optix.' I agree with Don Hoffman on lots, but not everything.

(6/7) Rufus' point that the progress of science is one of greater & greater human humility is very astute - I bet our instinct that consciousness is special and non-physical will be the last area of human hubris to fall as AI research progresses and we can start to quantify it.

(7/7) Would love to hear Don Hoffman talk over his views with a practicing quantum physicist like Sean Carroll on the #MindscapePodcast. And maybe head over to @UCIrvine to discuss my own evolutionary research with Don.
