Given the fact that only about 3% of republicans netted a crossover to vote for Democrats, the math implies that 20 million extra Democrats came out of somewhere and voted 99% Democrat.

There was a 3% net difference in crossover voting. That doesn't even come remotely close to explaining away a 20M increase over previous elections or Democrats getting 99% of newly registered voters. You're trying to explain away a statistical impossibility with ridiculous reasons
