Lady at airport security barks “Piss pot?” at me. I clearly looked confused. She repeats, “Piss pot?” I’m still confused. She continues, “I need to see your piss pot!” Ah…it’s that Cook Islands / Kiwi hybrid accent again! Finally, I produced my *PASSPORT* and all is well.

And so it’s farewell to Rarotonga and The Cook Islands. It’s been fun. Weather better than the photos suggest and certainly warm enough for us pale Scots. Now it’s on to Sydney, Port Douglas, Ayer’s Rock, Melbourne and Adelaide. The fun and indeed expense continues. 🌴😎🌴

It’s Friday afternoon…I think. Too many time changes recently. Anyway, whatever. This’ll do rather nicely. 🎼🌴😎🌴🎼

Being a bald fecker, one thing I’ve noticed on my South Pacific travels is that the “mullet” hairdo is definitely back! Although perhaps, around these parts, it never went away? Photo from Google as I didn’t want to start fighting with locals but there are some absolute crackers!

Reminds me of the old Wings song about a barbers shop in Campbeltown, “Mullet Kintyre.” 🎼😎🎼

We ate here last night. No…seriously! Her craps were pretty good. Sorry…crepes…I meant crepes. Crepes not craps.

“Hey! Look at the silly tourist with his daft souvenir shirt trying to blend in with the locals!” Well, you’d certainly be forgiven for thinking that. But no. Bought a few months ago from Matalan in Galashiels for an entirely reasonable £8. #CookIslands #Rarotonga #CheapShirt

Greetings from Rarotonga where they have….a brewery! Too late for breakfast so lunch it is. This is the local cooking lager and they’ve made a brave attempt although it does leave *quite a lot* to be desired. Anyway “Kia Orana!” to you one snd all.

I think this may well be my first rodeo as a proper *time traveller*. We leave NZ on Tuesday 20th October and arrive in the Cook Islands a few hours later on Monday 19th October. Back to the future or forward to the past?

The Tranz Alpine railway from Greymouth to Christchurch is apparently one of the most scenic routes in the world. I wouldn’t know because unbelievably, we’re on the Replacement Bus Service due to a hazard on the line. We’ve been told we’ll board the train somewhere down the line.

Update: Bus journey was only 30 mins and followed the railway most of the time. Now it’s 4 hours of spectacular scenery and unlimited free food and booze. Works for me!

So it’s farewell to *Glistening Greymouth*. It’s been quite a 20 hours! I’m pretty sure our hotel is masking some kind of sinister secret intelligence operation. Cold War vibes. Another 3 hours until our train leaves so anything could (but probably won’t) happen!

The majestic Copthorne hotel, Greymouth, NZ. Constructed from the panels of a scrapped WW2 battleship…or so it would appear. 😎

Greetings from Greymouth. The NZ chapter of our South Pacific tour is rapidly drawing to a close and it’s been fantastic. Almost 2000 miles driven. Tomorrow we take the Trans Alpine railway to Christchurch then on to the Cook Islands and Australia.

PS: The first 30 miles of tomorrow’s scenic train journey across NZ will be on…wait for it…a “Replacement Bus Service” due to track maintenance. You couldn’t make this up. Not entirely happy tbh. 🤬

I was just googling this somewhat expensively ticketed charity event as, after the initial fanfare, I’d heard nothing about it for a month or so. It’s behind a paywall but the headline is clear enough. According to The Times, “Bowie On The Loch” isn’t happening.

I’m at the Franz Josef Glacier in NZ. Sadly, it appears you need to take an expensive helicopter ride to see it properly. So I’ll just take their word that it actually exists and have a few more beers and a Chinese meal instead. Slainte!

Stoked to have visited Cardrona in NZ today and its magnificent old school hotel. I was an on-off resident of its Scottish counterpart for a year or two back in the early noughties. They’ve done a great job with the place!

Doesn’t seem that long ago. I was 5 years old, sitting in our kitchen with my mum listening to this song on Ed “Stewpot” Stewart’s “Junior Choice” Saturday morning radio show on BBC Radio 1. 64 seemed a very long way away. Then suddenly, I’m there. Unbelievable really. 😳
