AM I WRONG FOR REFUSING TO SWITCH HOTEL ROOMS SO MY FRIEND COULD STAY WITH HER BOYFRIEND? I recently returned from a wedding, and I need some unbiased third-party advice! A group of us, all longtime college friends in our 30s, attended the wedding of a couple from our class. Since it was a destination wedding, the bride and groom arranged discounted hotel rooms that accommodated two people each. I happened to have a lot of loyalty points with the hotel, so I managed to book a nicer suite for myself at a lower cost. I cleared it with the bride and groom, and they had no problem with it. I'm fairly introverted, so having my own space to recharge between wedding events was important to me. Now, two of our friends attending the wedding are dating each other. Let's call them Daphne and Fred. They both come from strict religious backgrounds, and they belong to different religions. Their relationship has caused tension with their families and has created some challenges for them as a couple. When Daphne found out I had my own room, she asked if I would switch with her so she and Fred could stay together. I said no. I'd used my own loyalty points to secure that suite, and I wanted the privacy and comfort it offered. Daphne offered to reimburse me for the difference in points, but explained that she and Fred couldn't be seen publicly sharing a room because of their families' expectations. My room was apparently their only opportunity to spend time together privately. I still refused. I explained that I wanted my own space and, to be completely honest, I wasn't comfortable becoming part of a plan to deceive their families. That last part really upset Daphne. Since then, she's been calling me selfish and hypocritical. She says I'm conforming to outdated social views about dating by refusing to help them spend time together. I don't think wanting to keep the room I arranged and paid for with my own points makes me selfish. I also don't think I'm obligated to get involved in their relationship difficulties or their family situation. But Daphne seems convinced that I'm being unreasonable. Am I wrong for refusing to switch rooms, or is my friend expecting too much of me?
