WHAT A BLACK WEDNESDAY! 🥺 My heart is heavy as I commiserate with the families of the NYSC Prospective Corps Members from Adeyemi Federal University of Education (AFUED), Ondo, who, on their journey to the Gombe NYSC Camp, were involved in a devastating and tragic accident. An 18-seater bus, full of bright young Nigerians with hopes and dreams, was reduced to silence in a moment—as nearly everyone on board succumbed instantly to the cold hands of death, leaving only two survivors barely clinging to life. This wave of needless tragedy is becoming unbearable. It is high time the Federal Government intervened decisively to stem the relentless loss of innocent lives on our roads. This is truly heartbreaking—an indescribable loss for their families, their institution, and our nation. 😭💔 Dear President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (@officialABAT), I implore you to kindly do something and also, halt the mobilization of @officialnyscng PCMs for the time being. 🙏💔

OPINION: A Report That Indicts Itself — The Contradiction at the Heart of the Minna Detainee Deaths Probe Dr Bukura Ahmed Let me begin by acknowledging the diligence of the committee that investigated the deaths of thirty-three detainees in Niger State. The work was painstaking, the findings are damning and the document they produced is one that every Nigerian who cares about accountability should read. Thirty-three dead. Fourteen of them minors. Fifty men and boys crammed into a twenty-square-metre cell, banging on the doors and begging for water while officers stood by and did nothing. The executive summary attributes the deaths to environmental asphyxia; a phrase that reads less like a medical finding and more like a verdict on the Nigerian state itself. For all of that, the committee deserves credit. But for all of that, the report also trips over its own feet in a way that should trouble every Nigerian who believes accountability means something. Here is the contradiction and it is not a small one. The same report that recommends a total overhaul and restructuring of the NSCDC leadership also finds in its own words that the arrest operation was carried out without the requisite approval from NSCDC National Headquarters. No proper planning, no involvement of the mining authorities, no involvement of the NSCDC leadership in Abuja or its Zonal Headquarters. The operation was conceived, executed and concealed at command level, far from the eyes of the Corps' leadership in Abuja. The commandant who ordered it has admitted as much; the operation was hidden from the leadership that would ordinarily have ordered t thorough investigation, profiled the suspects, shared intelligence, advised on the mode of operation and brought in sister agencies had the scale of the operation warranted it. None of that happened. The now suspended commandant acted on his own operational discretion and that discretion boomeranged with catastrophic consequences. If the report's own findings are true, then the National Headquarters is not the architect of this tragedy. It is a victim of its own subordinates. So why, then, does the same report call for the decapitation of that leadership? Why should the National Headquarters take the fall for an operation it was never told about? There are over thirty-six state commands, plus the FCT and the zonal structures and one of them chose to go rogue to bypass every laid-down channel, to conceal an operation from the very leadership that exists to supervise it and the remedy the committee proposes is to overhaul the leadership? What of the Niger command that failed to consult the proper channel before mounting such an operation? What of the officers who planned the raid, who crammed fifty human beings into a cell, who ignored their cries for help? What should their fate be, if the leadership that knew nothing is to be overhauled? The report rightly recommends murder charges against those officers. It should have stopped there or at least been honest that the two recommendations cannot comfortably coexist. You cannot have it both ways. Either the leadership knew in which case "gross leadership failure" is a euphemism for complicity and overhaul is the minimum consequence or the leadership did not know, in which case the failure is one of supervision and systems and the remedy is targeted reform not decapitation. The committee wants to absolve the top of knowledge while punishing it for sins it knew nothing about. Consider what this means in practice. The NSCDC has, over the years, done real and often unacknowledged work; reforming its operations, fighting saboteurs of critical national assets, protecting pipelines, deploying the Mining Marshals, coordinating smoothly with sister agencies to fight crime. The report does not commend any of this. It does not weigh it. It simply arrives at the easiest recommendation in any Nigerian probe report overhaul the leadership a recommendation that is vague, ...

... dramatic and costs nothing to announce. With the plenty killings in Benue, Plateau and other killings across the country we should as well recommend that all the service chiefs, Police IG, Governors of the states who are the Chief Security Officers of the State, Minister of Defence and also the President be overhaul because of the tragedies. Leadership is not a tea party and overhauling a system that has over the years done well in its core mandate but because of a mistake made by someone who didn’t do his job diligently making the leadership take the fall for that is just pure joke from the committee and those who recommended such. I am not naive about institutional responsibility. A command that can mount an operation of this scale, conceal it from both Zonal and National levels and leave thirty-three people dead in a cell is evidence that something in the architecture broken. The committee should have recommended better and more swift oversight accountability and also tell the leadership to put in place measures where all operations should be reported and all arrest made should be filed under the shortest possible time. This will further help is ensuring such issues don’t reoccur. There is also a question the report never answers and its silence is telling. Why the deliberate opacity? A command has institutionalized autonomy, yes, but it must take approval from its Zonal or National leadership before embarking on high-scale operations. That is the rule. The Niger command broke it. So the uncomfortable subtext of "overhaul the leadership" is that someone, somewhere, has decided the cleanest way out of this tragedy is to spread the blame upward to make the innocent share the guilt of the guilty so that the institution as a whole absorbs the shock. That is not accountability. That is the appearance of accountability, which is a very different thing. I will say plainly what I suspect and let the committee prove me wrong. There is a witchhunt here and it is aimed at a leadership that the report's own findings exonerate. Has this leadership ever been commended for the many good works it has done? Has any probe weighed the pipelines protected, the saboteurs stopped, the mining sites secured? But the committee is quick to recommend an overhaul knowing full well that the leadership was not complicit in the deaths of those thirty-three people. The motive behind a recommendation that contradicts the findings that precede it deserves to be unraveled as thoroughly as the deaths themselves. A committee that does good work in the findings and then undoes it in the recommendations has left the job half-finished and the half it left unfinished is the half that matters most. So let the report be acted upon but let it be acted upon honestly. Prosecute the commandant and the officers who planned the raid, crammed the cell and ignored the cries for water. Reform the approval and oversight mechanism so that no command can ever again conceal an operation of this kind. Commend what the institution has done well, so that reform is built on diagnosis rather than punishment. Above all, reconcile the findings with the recommendations, because a report that indicts itself cannot be the foundation for justice. The thirty-three dead fourteen of them children deserve a reckoning that is coherent. Right now, they have been given a document that points at the guilty with one hand and swipes at the innocent with the other. That is not accountability. It is confusion dressed as justice and the Nigerian people deserve better than both.

OPERATION HADIN KAI NEUTRALISES 44 TERRORISTS IN BORNO, DISRUPTS IED OPERATION Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), have neutralised 44 suspected terrorists and injured 16 others in coordinated operations across Borno State and the Lake Chad area. The operations, conducted between 26 and 28 October 2026, targeted terrorist elements in Kukawa Local Government Area and other locations within the Lake Chad region, following intelligence reports and surveillance observations. On 26 October, troops engaged suspected terrorists at separate locations in Kukawa, with battle damage assessments indicating that 28 terrorists were neutralised and six others injured. On 28 October, the Maritime Component, Naval Base Lake Chad, deployed in Baga, conducted offensive operations against terrorist targets in the Lake Chad area. Preliminary assessments indicated that eight terrorists were neutralised, while 10 others sustained varying degrees of injuries. In a separate operation, an air interdiction mission disrupted a suspected terrorist improvised explosive device (IED)-laying operation, neutralising eight operatives and destroying their vehicle, motorcycles and IED materials. The operation prevented the suspected terrorists from proceeding with their planned activities, further disrupting their operational capabilities. The Theatre Command urged members of the public to continue providing credible information to security agencies to support ongoing operations and efforts to restore lasting peace and security across the theatre.
