1. The Abayudaya (The Jewish Community of Uganda) Uganda is home to a unique and devout indigenous Jewish community known as the Abayudaya (which translates to "People of Judah" in Luganda). [1] •Origins: The community was founded between 1917 and 1920 by Semei Kakungulu, a former military leader who rejected British colonial missionaries, embraced the Hebrew Bible, and adopted Judaism. [1, 2] • •Persecution and Survival: In the 1970s, the military dictator Idi Amin outlawed Judaism, destroyed synagogues, and forced many to convert to Christianity or Islam under threat of death. The community dwindled to a few hundred survivors who practiced in secret until Amin's removal. [1, 2, 3] • •Modern Day: Today, the community has grown to several thousand members centered around the town of Mbale in eastern Uganda. They practice modern Conservative and Orthodox Judaism, and their rabbis are formally trained in international institutions. [1, 2, 3] • 2. The Historical "Uganda Scheme" (1903) In the early history of Zionism, Uganda was famously central to a geopolitical proposal regarding Jewish settlement. •The Proposal: In 1903, British Colonial Secretary Joseph Chamberlain proposed the Uganda Scheme(which actually encompassed land in modern-day Kenya) to Theodor Herzl, the founder of modern Zionism. • •The Goal: The territory was offered as a temporary, autonomous sanctuary for European Jews fleeing intense persecution and violent anti-Semitic pogroms in the Russian Empire. • •The Outcome: The proposal sparked fierce debate within the Zionist Congress. It was ultimately rejected in 1905, as the movement remained firmly committed to establishing a Jewish homeland in historic Palestine. •
