I agree with every word of this.
Slavery was an evil in which people from every continent and region participated. We should be honest about the whole history, not select the parts that are politically convenient today, especially given Britain's leading role in ending the transatlantic slave trade.
If Caribbean countries are asking Britain for a formal apology for Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, will they also be asking the same of the descendants of African kingdoms, rulers and merchants who captured, sold and profited from the trade?
On demands for reparations, whether through cash or debt relief, we have been down this track before. Twenty-five years ago, Jubilee 2000, Drop the Debt and Make Poverty History argued that cancelling the debts of poorer countries would give them a fresh start. More than $100 billion of debt was eventually written off, but many of those countries have since built up even bigger debts. Labour are already spending too much on Britain's welfare state, now is not the time for Andy Burnham to be providing global welfare.
There is no reason British taxpayers today should be held financially responsible for things that happened generations before any of us were born. And I have even less patience for political elites in commonwealth countries who don’t know how to make their own citizens prosperous now looking for another opportunity to blame Britain.
As Prime Minister, Andy Burnham should be Britain’s greatest defender. Instead, he is writing articles saying we need to confront our history (as if we haven't done enough of that) and considering another formal historical apology. Tony Blair already expressed Britain’s deep sorrow and regret for our role in the slave trade nearly twenty years ago. There is no need to do so again.
This is all another navel-gazing distraction. The Commonwealth should be looking forward, not endlessly backwards. That means economic partnerships to make us all richer and deeper military and security cooperation against common threats. If every Commonwealth summit becomes an exercise in presenting Britain with demands for cash then we need to start asking if it is worth the effort.

One of Britain’s biggest solar farm is set to devour 2,000 acres of prime Carse of Gowrie farmland between Perth and Dundee - the size of 1,250 football pitches.
Beautiful productive countryside plastered with solar panels. Countryside vandalism.

The university crisis is one of the most ignored issues in British politics and was barely mentioned this week.
This is essential from @gsoh31 for @ArguablyMag on how underfunding, marketisation and managerial incompetence created an avoidable disaster – and how it can be fixed. arguably.uk/p/how-to-save-br…

I fear for the Telegraph.
The new German owners are taking a wrecking ball to a fine journalistic institution by sacking 100 journalists ( despite saying they would invest) and pushing out the door the only names worth reading, the latest being the brave and super talented Alison Pearson.
All in favour of cutting costs but what is their big idea?
Some old nonsense about more foreign news (nobody will pay for that) and turning the Telegraph into a global behemoth.
That definitely won’t happen.
My advice is to take a tip from the financially successful Times;
Invest heavily in journalism and journalists, disclose information not available elsewhere, keep your good writers fed and watered.
I know there is nobody at the Telegraph, from the Editor downwards not concerned at their future and the future of the title.
These are tough times for the media, not made easier by these owners destroying their own £600million investment and the enjoyment of their readers.

Holyrood promotes itself as open and participatory (would be worth analysing how successful it has been and if resources could be better used) yet this basic function is so poor. It started off well but as in other respects has become self/satisfied and self-congratulatory.

The Labour government don’t give a shit about the countryside. A mixture of inverted snobbery against rural communities, rural independent businesses, farmers and landowners and seeing farmland as an asset to dismantle and asset grab for themselves and their net zero and big tech corporation cronies.

It has been six weeks since I revealed in @heraldscotland that 90 programmes at Edinburgh University would close from 2027.
Since then, I've written more than 30 articles about the cuts, the majority being exclusives.

Pretty sure this is as a result of the axing of Good Morning Scotland. The replacement is in no way the sort of serious news programme our democracy needs. Despite the quality of the presenters. I’ve pretty much 💯 migrated to the Today programme.

A new nuclear power station in England has been branded a "terrible deal" for taxpayers. Sizewell C was supposed to cost £20bn. It's now expected to cost between £40.5bn and £47.7bn, with construction finishing between 2039 and 2043.
Ferries anyone?

Exactly as many of us have been saying for a long time
Former BBC Panorama producer @philcraig says the Beeb has been taken over by a “radical generation” and that “all the mistakes” in its Gaza coverage “seem to be in the same direction.”
He points to the al-Ahli hospital blast, when the BBC rushed to blame Israel for what turned out to be a misfired Hamas rocket, and warns this kind of poor journalism has helped fan fires around the world — including literal fires at synagogues.
Gerald and I are proud to call Phil a friend and colleague. Thank you for the clarity and courage in calling out your former employer.

When Alex Salmond was the leader of the SNP & First Minister of Scotland, he understood the huge economic importance of North Sea oil and gas to the prosperity of North East Scotland. He wholeheartedly championed North Sea oil and gas.
The current leader of the SNP and First Minister of Scotland, John Swinney however, has typically shown absolutely no decisiveness, vision or basic intent on North Sea oil and gas. He just floats around it with half-hearted and equivocal indecisiveness.
