Well, another Cardinal has come out with a, shall we say, puzzling take on evangelization.
A few years ago, Cardinal Américo Aguiar, at the time auxiliary bishop of Lisbon, said that he and the other organizers of World Youth Day in his hometown had no interest in converting anyone to Christ.
Now Cardinal Jean-Paul Vesco of Algeria has opined that âthe Church is not there to convertâ and âChristians should approach other religions through fraternity rather than seeking conversions.â
Excuse me, butâŠwhat?
Last time I checked, the Founder said, âAll authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.â Sure sounds like conversion to me.
When St. Paul came to Corinth or Athens or Thessalonica, his purpose was not to listen or to form a discussion group but rather to declare an unnerving message: the euangelion (glad tidings) that Jesus Christ is risen from the dead.
So impassioned is he for this work that he says, âI have become all things to all people, that I might by all means save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospelâ (1 Cor. 9:22); and âIf I proclaim the gospel, this gives me no ground for boasting, for an obligation is laid on me, and woe to me if I do not proclaim the gospelâ (1 Cor. 9:16)!
Moreover, the entire thrust of the Second Vatican Council was toward bringing the Light of Christ to the peoples of the world (Lumen Gentium). And this missionary Ă©lan has given rise in the last few decades to the idea of a ânew evangelization,â which is to say, a fresh declaration of the Lordship of Christ.
Quite obviously, no one thinks that this work of evangelization should be done in a brow-beating, overbearing, or disrespectful manner (proselytization), but for Godâs sake, letâs not throw the baby out with the bathwater.
If I really thought that the Church does not exist to bring people to Christ, then I would resign and get an honest job.

What terrifies me is if ISIS were to detonate a nuclear device and kill 50 million Americans. Imagine the backlash against peaceful Muslims?

Henry Nowakâs murderer received a sentence of just 21 years, because the judge said due to his religion he had a âgood legal reasonâ to carry a large dagger around in public.
TWO TIER JUSTICE

The judge ruled any legal reason for carrying the dagger ended when drawn, treated its misuse as an aggravating factor increasing the minimum term, and imposed life imprisonment with a 21-year minimum. judiciary.uk/wp-content/uplâŠ

Calling people out for making extreme claims without any compelling evidence is not "trying to scare people into silence." It's actually inviting them to say more in order to fully justify their claim.
They pretend they're being silenced because they have nothing else to say.

What frustrates me is the narrative â heavily promoted by liberals in both Canada and the US â that Canada was somehow this boundless reserve of goodwill for America before Trump. No. Anti-Americanism, blaming America, and smug righteousness at "not being America" is a defining problem with the psychology of this country, and Trump is just the latest excuse for indulging in it.
One of the big problems with Trump, in fact, is that he makes bog-standard Canadian anti-Americanism seem righteous and principled at a time when the future of Canada-US relations are actually at stake in very real, tangible ways that will have a tremendous impact on the Canadian economy, and thus Canadians' lives. In other words, Canadians are not dealing with a crisis in a clear-eyed or pragmatic way, we are just mashing the same old AMERICA BAD button we bash all the time, in every context, always.
For the record.
The unintended consequence of Canadian voters constantly blaming the United States for this countryâs economic and social decline is that it masks our own accountability. For decades, it hasnât been Washington making our policy choicesâitâs been us. Canadians have repeatedly endorsed governments that erode competitiveness, deter investment, and lower our standards of living. Blaming America for decisions we empowered our own leaders to make is like a child blaming their friend for mischief they chose to join. At some point, the fault lies not in our neighbour, but in ourselves.
The CBC's World News section spotlights *seven* different stories about the ICE shooting in Minneapolis â and only beneath this will you find anything about the unprecedented anti-government protests in Iran.
The bias is clear, and it's yet another reason to defund the CBC.

If you believe free speech is for you but not your political opponents, you're illiberal.
If no contrary evidence could change your beliefs, you're a fundamentalist.
If you believe the state should punish those with contrary views, you're a totalitarian.
If you believe political opponents should be punished with violence or death, you're a terrorist.
