Despite 84% of the world's population residing in low- and middle-income countries, these populations are vastly underrepresented in gut microbiome research. Here, we expand the microbiome atlas of Africa through a study of 1,800 women in four countries. biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

It's a privilege to be in a team that's dedicated to equitable collaboration, community-engaged research, and genomic capacity building. I've been lucky to partner with excellent scientists and role models, including @shazeZA, @V3ed, @JakobWirbel , Luicer Olubayo, and Ami Bhatt.

While most studies use relative microbial measurements, excellent prior work has used absolute quantification to infer the directionality of changing microbial abundances. Using these methods, we identified how absolute microbial composition changed across storage methods.

How can we support equitable international research? How can we leverage thoughtful and open collaboration to push the bounds of microbiome research? Read Voke’s commentary for her thoughts and recommendations:
Underrepresentation of global populations in biomedical research has become a glaring challenge for implementation science with implications for precision medicine. rdcu.be/cWvDE 1/ @shazeZA @DylanMaghini @SBIMB1

If the last few days have shown me anything, it's that we *desperately* need to be training scientists to understand the societal and ethical implications of research.

We are excited to share our new preprint extending our analyses of coalescence times on the X chromosome under different types of first-cousin consanguinity. This work was done with Alissa Severson, @ShaiCarmi , and @NoahARosenberg. doi.org/10.1101/2022.05.05.4… 1/7
