Nearly ten years ago, I first approached the David Bowie estate about creating “STAGE”—an immersive, multimedia arena show that would let audiences of up to 17,000 experience one of David’s finest filmed performances in a room full of like-minded fans. It seemed destined to be one of those ideas that arrive and vanish almost in the same breath.
But for some reason, this one stayed.
DAVID BOWIE “STAGE” will have its world premiere on February 14 at the Uber Arena in Berlin as part of the Berlin Film Festival.
What is it? It is not a movie screened in an arena. It is a curated multimedia experience designed specifically for arenas and presented on screens so large they require an arena setting. There is not one screen but several, each with its own image and perspective, inviting the audience to look where they want—more like theatre than cinema. Expect the unexpected.
We began our first assembly in 2018 and have been refining the sound and color grading since completing Moonage Daydream in 2021. The sound was designed and mixed by the team that collaborated on Moonage Daydream, led by Academy Award winner Paul Massey and three-time nominee David Giammarco. The sound design was created by Academy Award winners John Warhurst and Nina Hartstone and will be presented in 7.1.
The Lighting for the show has been designed by OBE Patrick Woodroffe, who collaborated with the Rolling Stones for decades. The lighting is as much a part of the experience as the sound and will be choreographed and integrated with the film elements in a way we’ve never seen. Hopefully, it will all work together seamlessly. One wonders. I suppose Berlin will be a bit of a high wire act.
This show was built for 2027 and would not have been possible without recent technological advances.
I am so grateful to the David Bowie Estate for entrusting me with this once in a lifetime opportunity. And am beyond grateful to Tricia Tuttle and her staff at the Berlin film festival for providing us with the most apropos launching pad.
And to the Bowie community who have been so supportive throughout this 10 year journey, this one is for you.

the cheesecake factory discourse a back to the future reminder of what 2008-2016 was like on here. Obama makes funny joke revealing he's like the average American (fluent enough in gaudy chain restaurants to jest about a specific chain). GOPers decide it means he's not #oneofus. This goes on for days...
WILDWOOD's great! We applaud those like @LAIKAStudios who:
Take a big swing.
Make things by hand.
Don't take focus groups notes as gospel.
Don't sanitize the PG-13 away.
The majors would never, so reward these efforts with a ticket purchase this weekend.
My @NYCMayor we have the opportunity to do something truly amazing for the city with RRR when you're ready

Had a blast helping Hades Films, @deadmeatjames and team bring 13 fun, gooey, gory horror shorts to 600 screens tonight with FRESH MEAT.
I had like 14 people tell me there were no trailers on DIGGER in VistaVision at AMC Lincoln Square but not one of you told me that if you snuck upstairs to the IMAX instead there was a trailer for Lynch's WILD AT HEART in the pack that would blast you in the face

There’s a moment in CAMERON WINTER AT CARNEGIE HALL that made me think of something Powell & Pressburger do in A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH. Gorgeous. PTA forever.
Oh. Hell. Yes.
NEW: The Grand Illusion Cinema lives! The single-screen movie house that'd been in Seattle’s University District for more than 50 years before closing in January 2025 is coming home. It will be taking over at the Varsity Theatre later this year. Read my story @seattletimes below.
This place is incredible, and in a world of “oh it’s online somewhere” it’s kind of beautiful to have a place full of stuff that is decidedly not

The Cinema Arts Centre made a public allegation of "serious misconduct" against co-director Dylan Skolnick a few weeks back.
Because that's worded so ominously, we're amplifying reporting from @Newsday that confirms this all is over him handling bookings for other theaters...

RIP to Jeremy Thomas. A legend who taught me so much about what is important in the film business. Proud to have worked with him on several movies and will always remember EO and PINA most of all, 2 films that defy categorization and time.
