Is your baby more inclined to nap on your chest than in their crib?
Becoming a human sleep surface can sometimes make life challenging as a new mother - but to your baby thereโs literally nothing that feels safer or more relaxing.
Nothing that feels more like home.
And, when you think about it, it all makes perfect sense.
Your baby has spent 9 months gestating in union with the subtle movements of your body.
The first and most comforting sounds they knew were (and are) your heartbeat and voice.
Throw in the full-body sensory contact, your own warmth and rhythmic breathing and itโs little wonder that this is your babyโs favorite sleep position.
Well meaning friends and relatives may guide you away from this practice, for fear of spoiling your baby and creating habits that can become hard to break.
But Iโm going to advise you otherwise, at least in part.
As Iโve discussed elsewhere, itโs impossible to spoil a newborn with too much love and comfort.
The earliest months of life are a critical window during which trust and attachment are established in ways that will benefit your child for life.
So as long as you can do so safely, let your little one snuggle you as much as theyโd like.
But do recognize that you have needs as well.
Even the best and most attentive parents canโt give their undivided attention 24/7.
Itโs okay to use your bassinet as neededโฆ and there is definitely wisdom in acquainting your little one with sleep surfaces other than your chest sooner than later.
Just remember that, like most things in parenting, itโs not an all or nothing proposition.
You do youโฆ but donโt be dissuaded for fear of spoiling your newborn.

Very sad news, Frank had a long and distinguished career in Parliament and was very kind and helpful to me as a new neighbouring MP. He was held in such high esteem by his constituents and his colleagues in Parliament & did important work at @TheEPCollege theguardian.com/politics/202โฆ

So sad to hear of the passing of Lord Field. His commitment to improving the lives of children through social justice was one of the reasons I wanted to join this wonderful trust. A truly wonderful legacy #RIP โ at Macclesfield, England

Your baby doesnโt just love looking at your face - they STUDY it.
Eye tracking studies suggest that babies focus their attention on two areas of special interest: the eyes and the mouth.
Caregiversโ eyes are a particular focus in early infancy - and tell a story about your emotional state (and hence babyโs sense of safety and wellbeing), attentiveness, and more.
But as your babyโs interest in language grows, your mouth becomes the main attraction. Your baby watches it with keen interest, working to decipher just how you make all of those amazing sounds.
I love this video. As mom presents a new and unusual buzzing noise with her lips, babyโs eyes widen over and over in a show of heightened interest and curiosity.
As if to say: What is that noise? And how is she making it?!
As a student of momโs face, in time sheโll master making all of these sounds on her own.
