Great weekend ahead with partly to mostly sunny skies, low humidity and a gusty northeast breeze. The dry weather continues into next week. In fact, Halloween looks awesome!

CLOCKS BACK HALLOWEEN NIGHT! 🎃⏰ Ready or not, we “fall back” NEXT weekend, not this one! Before heading to bed on Halloween night, remember to turn your clocks back one hour. The official change happens at 2 am Sunday, November 1. Enjoy those later sunsets while they last! Despite the headlines and confusion, we’re still changing the clocks this year. The House of Representatives has passed a bill to make daylight saving time permanent, but it has not cleared the Senate or become law. And while North Carolina and South Carolina can consider changes, neither state can adopt year-round daylight saving time without a change in federal law. Until that happens, we’ll keep springing forward and falling back!

While drought remains significant, especially in the eastern Carolinas, it has improved considerably over the past 5 months. With late fall and winter likely to bring above-normal rain, the drought will likely be erased by early next year.

A powerful low-pressure system off the east coast has acquired enough tropical characteristics to be named Subtropical Storm Josephine. Additional strengthening is likely, but it will transition back to a non-tropical system tomorrow, so even though it may produce hurricane-force winds, technically, it won't be a hurricane.

If the trends continue, this will become Subtropical Storm Josephine later today or tonight. Named or not, the impacts for the Outer Banks and northward will be the same: coastal flooding and large waves.

TROPICAL UPDATE 2:30 PM WEDNESDAY 10/21/2026 DISTURBANCE 1: A powerful non-tropical low a few hundred miles off the mid-Atlantic coast has developed some subtropical characteristics, with more organized thunderstorms and less distinct fronts near its center. It could become a subtropical storm tonight or early Thursday as it accelerates northeastward. By Friday, stronger upper-level winds and cooler waters should limit further development. Next name on the list is Josephine. DISTURBANCE 2: A trough of low pressure several hundred miles east-southeast of Bermuda is producing widespread, disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Some development is possible over the next day or two as it drifts north-northeastward. By the weekend, stronger upper-level winds are expected to shut down the opportunity for further development.
