Happy Halloween! In January 1942, the tanker Athelcrown was torpedoed, leaving 12 crewmen adrift in an open lifeboat. On the fifth day, the freezing men spotted a passing ship and called out for help, but they could only see a large black cat peering down at them. Two days later, the ship silently returned and got close enough for the men to board. The ship was abandoned, but the cat led the survivors to food and warm clothing. The men lived on the derelict vessel for eight days before being rescued by HMS Dahlia. The cat refused to leave, scratching and biting rescuers before disappearing into the ship’s bowels. Several months after the incident, other sailors still reported sightings of a ghost ship sailing with a black cat. True story!

The Devil’s Stone Inn, Shebbear, #Devon 🍻
Taking its name from the Devil’s Stone that lies on the church grounds just across the village square. (a stone that must be turned annually to keep the Devil out) and reported as one of Britain’s most haunted pubs. #Halloween2026 🎃👻🪦
This proves nothing, it’s just my shopping list @GeorgieClarence

Ripon is home to a horn blowing tradition that has taken place nightly at the city's obelisk without interruption for over 1,000 years, dating back to 886 AD.
King Alfred the Great granted Ripon a charter that year, in the form of a ceremonial horn, and advised locals to appoint a "Wakeman" to patrol the city and protect it from Viking raids.
Every night at 9pm since, a hornblower has sounded the horn at all four corners of the market obelisk to "set the watch" even through two world wars, and even from hornblowers' own back gardens during lockdown.
One of the oldest unbroken civic traditions anywhere in the world, still happening tonight, exactly as it has for over 1,100 years 🏴 – at Ripon, England
York is the most important.
The history of York is the history of England ~ King George VI, 1923 🏴
He wasn't exaggerating. Romans, Vikings, Saxons and Normans have all left their mark here. The city's been a Roman capital, a Viking stronghold and the site of battles that shaped the fate of the whole nation.
Nearly 2,000 years of history, layered street upon street and still standing today 💪
