I wrote about Troy Jackson, whose campaign combines left populism on economic issues with hyper-progressivism on cultural ones. Jackson emphasizes his working class bona fides, but like Platner before him, his maximalist politics cater to laptop job progressive suburbanites. 1/
Troy Jackson is courting working-class voters in Maine—while championing a set of policies that many of them don’t support, @Tyler_A_Harper argues. theatlantic.com/culture/2026…
Trump: We were in the midst of negotiating and a lot of stupid people said why aren’t you putting Russian sanctions—
Collins: But you said you didn’t give anything for his release
Trump: If I didn’t do that, you wouldn’t have him coming back.
Collins: So you did give something.
Trump: You don’t know anything. You’re fake news CNN.
Collins: You’re saying you lifted the sanctions in exchange for his release?
Trump: You don’t know what you’re talking about. You’re a low IQ person. You’re a dummy.
ok. this is an actual endorsement of the Vivek ad, unlike his earlier line that he was upset that republicans were upset with the ad. Can't really believe that they're attaching themselves to this thing.
Trump: "I alone could secure a prisoner release from Russia without giving anything in return"
Trump literally ten minutes later: "Now you idiots know why I had to waive sanctions on Russia, no shot I got that prisoner release otherwise"
Okay but [REDACTED] was still better in [REDACTED]
Holmes is a well documented fraudster and liar and yet even getting "to the bottom" of questions like "why'd she do it" end up being impossible to pin down. Everyone is obsessing over the different possibilities the movie dangles. But one of my takeaways from the movie is that it is possible to fixate so hard on psychoanalysis and motive that you lose track of what is actually graspable and knowable: the acts!
Replying to @DKThomp
I think what makes the movie both incredibly powerful and also frustrating to people who know the Holmes story really well is that it’s a film mostly “about” the impossible ambiguity of truly getting to the bottom of another person*—and that lesson is largely true and it’s profoundly performed in the movie—but this particular movie is about a very particular person who lied so blatantly in so many ways that an alternative and more prosecutorial documentary wouldn’t have struggled much to prove who she is: a convincing liar who’s lying (convincingly at times) about having been a convincing liar. And so while Fielder’s artifice is both incredibly entertaining and often ingenious I get the critique that it’s also an unnecessary maneuver to get to the bottom of *this particular person* whose record of lying is so blatant and whose psychopathy is so richly documented in the public record.
*I mean, right? That’s clearly the point? Seems important that the movie begins with the husband saying “nobody knows who she is” and ends with Amanda saying she can’t be sure who Elizabeth is or how Nathan feels about her, and the last frame is a paragraph of text about how no one—not the NYT, not Fielder, not Holmes—can be absolutely sure if Elizabeth actually told the Times that Amanda was “playing a character I created” bc nobody has a perfect record of the most important quote in the film ever actually being said. The movie is designed to build toward the conclusion that there is no definitive conclusion.
Typical Saletan home run--restrained and fair and all the more devastating for it
Susan Collins says she's delivered for Maine. But the question is what baseline do you measure her accomplishments against? @saletan dove into the record and found her case pretty unpersuasive

In 2032 this guy will still be pretending it's his first ever cycle voting for Republicans and his fans will still somehow be buying it

VR didn’t confirm that his campaign made the ad until after his 430 event today, which means there’s a lot of commentary predicated on how he should play this ad he totally didn’t make and may be psyop
