Segment 2: BASIC STEPS TO START INVESTING:
We have covered the reasons why you should invest in the NGX. In this segment, we will cover the steps starting below.
MODULE 1: LEARN THE FUNDAMENTALS OF INVESTING — THE FIRST STEP TO START INVESTING ON NGX
The first and most important step before investing in the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) is to learn the fundamentals of investing.
Investing without knowledge is risky. But when you understand the basics, you can make smarter decisions and avoid costly mistakes.
Learning the fundamentals simply means understanding key ideas like:
- What a share is
- How companies make money
- Why share prices go up and down
- The difference between investing and gambling
- The importance of patience and long-term thinking
You don’t need to be an expert. You just need to understand the basics before putting your money into the market.
EXAMPLE 1: Investing Without Knowledge
Imagine someone hears that a company’s share price is rising and quickly buys shares without understanding the business.
Later, the price drops, and the person panics and sells at a loss.
This happened not because investing is bad, but because the person did not understand the fundamentals.
EXAMPLE 2: Investing With Knowledge
Now imagine another person takes time to learn how investing works.
They study the company, understand the risks, and invest patiently.
Even if the price goes up and down in the short term, they remain calm because they understand the process.
Over time, they make better decisions and build confidence.
Key Lesson: Knowledge Comes Before Investment
Successful investors don’t rush. They learn first, then invest.
Simple Rule to Remember:
Learn before you invest. Knowledge protects your money.
Watch out for the Module 1 breakdown where we explain the key ideas posted in this module.
INTRODUCTION TO THE NIGERIAN EXCHANGE (NGX): A SIMPLE GUIDE TO INVESTING
The Nigerian Exchange (NGX) is the marketplace where shares of companies are bought and sold in Nigeria. It is where businesses raise money to grow, and where individuals like you and me can invest to build wealth over time.
Investing in the NGX simply means owning a small part of a company. As the company grows and makes profit, your investment can grow too—through price increases and dividends (cash payments to shareholders).
You don’t need to be rich to start investing. What you need is knowledge, discipline, and a long-term mindset. With as little as a modest amount of money, you can begin your journey into the world of investing.
Why Invest in the NGX?
- To grow your money over time
- To earn dividends (passive income)
- To beat inflation
- To build financial security for the future
Basic Steps to Start Investing:
1. Learn the fundamentals of investing
2. Choose a licensed stockbroker or brokerage firm with their apps. Choices are Bamboo, Afrinvest etc.
3. Open a Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS) account
4. Fund your brokerage account
5. Buy shares of strong, reputable companies
6. Monitor your investment and stay consistent
Remember: Investing is not gambling. It is a strategy for building wealth patiently and wisely.
Start small. Stay consistent. Think long term.
Apt!!!
Quality education is not cheap.
You can't pay ₦50K a year and expect quality education.
Look at the facts...
Country, percentage of students on loans, number of students on loans, and amount disbursed.
🇳🇬 - 60%-1.4 Million students ~N250B
🇺🇸 - 47%-44 Million students - $1.8T
🇬🇧 - 95%-6 Million students - £267B
🇨🇦 - 51%- 650,000 students - $28B
🇦🇺 - 80%-3 Million students -$53B
🇯🇵 - 50%- 1.2 Million students - $65B
🇳🇴 - 60%- 400,000 students - $25B
Now let’s look at what Public Universities in Nigeria, Africa, and globally charge new medical students
1 - UNILAG, MEDILAG - ₦0 tuition; ~₦250,000 in sundry fees.
2 - University of Ghana (Ghana): ~₦2,142,264
3 - University of Cape Town (South Africa): ~₦4,061,250
4 - University of Michigan (USA): ~₦52,500,000
How about % of Students on Loans?
UNILAG: Less than 5%
University of Ghana: Less than 10%
University of Cape Town: ~50%
University of Michigan: ~30%
Why does the richest country in the world charge a premium for education at public universities that leaves over 40% of American students taking on loans to get educated?
If you don't like UNILAG's ~₦250,000 a year for medicine and you don't like NELFUND, you can go to Ghana and pay over ₦2 Million per semester.
They have student loans for you and they will charge you 6% to 12% interest, since you don't like NELFUND'S 0% interest rate.
✌🏾
When it was less than 20k in total (tuition and all) people were still dropping out because their parents couldn’t afford it. Many students that ‘afforded’ it had to do many odd things to be able to, from odd and sometimes immoral jobs for the males and for the girls, selling their bodies.
Now students can FOCUS on school, parents focus on other things and the education that has to be paid for at a more convenient time for the student who is then an adult and working.
And for now, AT 0 INTEREST!!!
Na only winsh and people wey nor get sense go dey against this thing.
AGREED 👍
Ours also was increased, but then, when I was in 200L and our fee was still 127k, two of my guys still took LOA because they couldn’t afford to pay.
No matter how you want to put it, NELFUND loan relieved a lot of parents. Some parents have 3 to 4 children in UNI. They don’t have to worry about where the next tuition fee is coming from.
I’m not supporting TINUBU. I’m just saying he really made a great impact on education.
Students no longer have reasons to drop out now that the fee is even higher, but thousands of students still dropped out when it was affordable.
