Dr. WEB DuBois: In 1956, I shall not go to the polls. I have not registered. I believe that democracy has so far disappeared in the United States that no “two evils” exist. There is but one evil party with two names, and it will be elected despite all I can do or say. There is no third party. On the Presidential ballot in a few states (seventeen in 1952), a “Socialist” Party will appear. Few will hear its appeal because it will have almost no opportunity to take part in the campaign and explain its platform.  If a voter organizes or advocates a real third-party movement, he may be accused of seeking to overthrow this government by “force and violence.” Anything he advocates by way of significant reform will be called “Communist” …”

😍😍😍 1. My uni capitulates on AI, putting out a "use AI for everything" guidance co-written by ... Claude. 2. A guest lecturer follows the official guidance & sets an AI-based assignment. 3. Our students rebel, demand AI-free assignments, on sustainability and ethics grounds.

For far too long, all the adjectives have been for male scholars, with tiny exceptions for mega-giants, like Arendt, or Ostrom, or ... well that might be it? 🤦‍♀️ Anyway, buy Isabella Weber's book everyone, and work to make the world more Weberesque. 🥳🥳🥳 guardianbookshop.com/anti-fa…

I am so thankful for Isabella Weber and this crazy amount of work she is doing to try to save our democracies-economies-lives-world at this dark hour. Also very happy she gets her own adjective in this interview: "Weberesque." Let's hear it for Weberesque antifascist economics!

Over May and June, 2,877 people died in the UK due to extreme heat. Today Labour has approved new gas drilling in the North Sea to please Donald Trump and Shell. Now we know whose side Labour is on.

Labour knows the consequences of the climate crisis. Their own words prove it. Yet when it comes to Jackdaw, they’ve put the fossil fuel industry first.

Will Labour next week in the budget tell us sad stories about "difficult decisions" and how there's "no money left?" Or will this Labour Government challenge the broken economic thinking that has lead us to this place? And tax the assets of multimillionaires & billionaires? 👀

This is one of the most basic measures the Labour Government could have taken to make taxation fairer. Once again this Labour Government is showing they'll side with wealth and power rather than everyone struggling right now.
🚨 BREAKING 🚨 Chancellor Healey rules out CGT rise. That's bad news for a former Mayor of Manchester who famously once said “we have overtaxed labour and undertaxed wealth." Our thoughts? 👇🧵1/4 theguardian.com/uk-news/2026…

Today's decision by Labour to approve new drilling in the North Sea is climate vandalism. It's a betrayal of all of our futures, and Labour has abandoned all credibility in the fight against climate change. This is a victory for Shell over the people.

The UK health security agency estimates 3000 people died due to excess heat this summer. We know that many more wildfires and floods are coming that will destroy lives and communities. And Andy Burnham says that this huge new oil & gas field is "the pragmatic approach."
Breaking: The government has now formally approved the Jackdaw gas field and says it will start to supply British homes and businesses by the end of the month It says that at its peak it will increase domestic gas production by 6% John Healey, the Chancellor, is also announcing an ‘energy wealth fund’. It will use tax revenues from the North Sea to invest in green projects, with an initial £2billion of funding Miatta Fahnbulleh, the energy secretary, says it will not stop the UK from meeting its net zero targets Andy Burnham: ‘I welcome the Energy Secretary’s decision, which will protect hundreds of jobs and help keep millions of homes warm this winter. At a time when people are really struggling, it's right that we look in a responsible way at maximising the existing energy reserves we have in Britain that could help ‘We’re committed to moving towards renewable energy and reaching net zero by 2050. But even on our ambitious climate path, we’ll still require oil and gas as part of our energy needs for decades to come. That’s why we’re taking a pragmatic approach to the North Sea.’

We have already extracted more oil and gas than we can burn in our lifetimes and still have a habitable planet. The Labour Government is lying to us about the climate disaster. And this same energy secretary admitted earlier in the year this will do nothing to lower our bills.
Energy Secretary @Miatsf says Zack Polanski's criticism about the govt giving the green light to Jackdaw is "complete nonsense". The government claims they can still meet their climate objectives.

Surreal to hear Energy Secretary try and say this is a "pragmatic decision." It will do nothing to lower bills. It will do lots for the profits of the oil & gas companies. And will continue us further down the path of floods and wildfires. Disastrous decision from Labour.
On going ahead with Jackdaw: "@ZackPolanski.. says this is a betrayal of all of our futures.. do you really think this is the right thing to do?" @Miatsf: "Well look I do.. we have seen that climate change is here.. heat waves, wild fires, drought.. its a pragmatic decision"

My colleague Sian Berry is spot on. I know many Labour MPs know the Home Secretary's plans on indefinite leave to remain are cruel and unfair. Now is the time for decent MPs to stand up.
