I don't know if it's the algorithm promoting extreme stances, but all I've seen on my TL re. new Irish citizenship requirements is disingenous comments saying the govt is making applicants learn Irish or rabid racists saying nobody should gain citizenship through naturalisation.

I actually think the proposed changes are really fair. 8 years is not a very long time if you're committed to a large part of your life being spent in the country (which you should be if you're applying for citizenship).

We can only have a robust welfare safety net for those who cannot provide for themselves if more people are contributing to that net than take from it, so financial self-sufficiency is also a fair criterion for citizenship.

It's also hugely important to be able to communicate with your fellow citizens and state agencies, so a good working knowledge of the English OR Irish languages (realistically most likely English) is essential in order to enjoy the rights and fulfil the obligations of citizenship

Pauline Hanson says political correctness is ruining Australia because people can’t “say what they really think.” Funny thing is, she just spent an hour at the National Press Club saying exactly what she thinks about migrants, Muslims, Indigenous programs, climate policy, workers, childcare, universities and the media. Nobody stopped her. The real irony? The one thing many Australians won’t say publicly is that Pauline Hanson is wrong. Not because it’s banned, but because every criticism becomes another claim of victimhood and another fundraising opportunity. Free speech isn’t being silenced. Hanson is living proof of that. She’s been saying controversial things for nearly 30 years, gets endless media coverage, sits in Parliament, and commands national headlines whenever she speaks. The question isn’t whether she can speak. The question is whether her ideas stand up when they’re examined. And that’s what seems to upset her most.

In light of the current public discourse about Australian culture and values, and with similar discussions hapoening in Ireland, here's a piece I wrote for the Irish Times about how a multicultural society can be successful if underpinned by common values irishtimes.com/abroad/2026/0…

I'm working in a small hospital in the Australian outback. Today we resuscitated a woman from NZ with a critical GI haemorrhage. The other ED doctors were Indian and Malaysian. The anaesthetist was Singaporean, the surgeon who did the scope in ED is Egyptian. I'm Irish. 1/2

The Australian health system would completely crumble if it weren't for immigrant doctors and other healthcare workers.

There seems to be a tendency to identify the rioters in Belfast as being non-Irish Loyalists in order to distance Irish people from the racists, as if we didnt have our own race riots after an Algerian man stabbed children in Dublin city. We have plenty of our own scumbags.

This is a hard article to read, but I hope you'll do so. I've spent some time reporting on widespread rape and other sexual violence of Palestinian male and female prisoners by Israeli authorities, and the article is now published. The assault victims were warned not to give speak of what they endured -- they were sometimes told they would be killed or raped if they gave interviews -- but they found the courage to do so. One man described being raped three times in a single day in Israeli prison, the third time after he tried to protest. A young woman said the guards would come in at the beginning of each shift and strip her naked and abuse her. Another reported that she was shown photos of herself being raped and warned they would be released unless she cooperated with Israeli intelligence. Even three children who had been detained told me they had been sexually abused. Look, whatever our position on the Middle East, we should be able to agree on being anti-rape. Sexual assaults were horrific when Israeli women were targeted on Oct. 7, and they're equally horrific when Israeli authorities use them against Palestinians day after day after day. We should be able to find common ground in opposing rape. Here's a gift link to the article: nytimes.com/2026/05/11/opini…

Every year the usual suspects who demand respect for the ANZACs are dismissive of the Aboriginal struggle against invasion and colonisation. Every year I'm reminded of how Yassmin Abdel-Magied was hounded out of Australia for having an expansive understanding of "lest we forget".

I went to an Irish medical school. Apart from the yearly admin fee, the degree fees were entirely subsidies by the taxpayers and the international students. The college was so well resourced from all the international fees that 1/

There were so many societies, events and opportunities for new experiences I wouldn't have had otherwise. Going from a school year of 100 white Irish girls to an class of 250 students from all over the world was an incredibly mind-opening experience, and I'm so grateful for it.

Talking in the group chat about looking up our families in the 1926 census, Protestant friend says "are any servants mention in your family's forms?" Like GAL my family is all Catholic farmers, the daughters of the house *were* the servants

Absurd and inhuman violence is spreading ferociously through the sacred places of the Christian East, profaned by the blasphemy of war and the brutality of business, with no regard for people’s lives, which are considered at most collateral damage of self-interest. But no gain can be worth the life of the weakest, children, or families. No cause can justify the shedding of innocent blood.

This Open Ai-generated anatomy drawing gets so much funnier the longer you look at it. I had no idea the vastus medalis, vastus lateralis, tensor fascia lata and sartorius were all the same muscle!
OpenAI's new image model GPT-Image-2 has leaked It seems to have extremely good world knowledge and great text rendering Possibly better than Nano Banana Pro It's on @arena under code names: - maskingtape-alpha - gaffertape-alpha - packingtape-alpha
