I wrote a piece on the old Turkish proverb (not) that has been a thread running right through my year from January and still ongoing:

I spent many hours each day defending Starmer. I shouldn’t have had to. The media and his MPs chose not to tell the truth. They all allowed the false rise of Farage . They should be deeply ashamed.

Let’s play pretend. If the media had supported Starmer instead of using their energy to promote charlatan Farage. We’d be in such a good place. We’d be half way through the first term of good governance, growth and international credibility.
If only ….

Like what ?
Announcing measures already set out by Starmer ?
Speculating on possible policies for post GE29-if Labour is re-elected ?
Itsy bitsy tinkering around the existing edges ?
Making statements which then have to be clarified?
Then clafication issued on the clarification?
Reeves repeatedly vindicated, this time by Faisal Islam (though we have to join the dots ourselves, god forbid she be named). He does mention the chancellor having to 'establish credibility'. Oh he'll be OK: he's a man. In 2026 it's female chancellors who aren't allowed.

FUNERAL EVE INTERVIEW
Louise Dar was 7 months pregnant when she faced the auditors.
The day before her mother's funeral, Louise Dar was questioned. Post Office called it a formal interview, which is a lovely name for asking a grieving woman where the money went.
I read Louise Dar's sworn statement to the Post Office Horizon IT Inquiry @PostOffInquiry. She took over the village post counter in Lenzie, near Glasgow, in November 2014.
She is a mum of 3 and a former IT analyst, and before opening she asked for training on what to do when the books do not balance. She says she was fobbed off, and that a trainer told her cost cutbacks had shrunk the course from 5 days to 3.
On day one, she says, auditor Margaret Guthrie suggested she had taken the £977, even though they had been together all day. Louise Dar says Margaret Guthrie had entered the stamps wrongly herself and could not find her own mistake. Her advice for future trouble was to get on with it and ring the helpline. Reassuring stuff from the person sent to check everyone else's sums.
Then the audits came. In July 2015 about £10,500 was found missing and her branch shut for 6 weeks. She repaid £877 a month for 18 months. Two more audits found about £2,500 in 2016 and £6,900 in 2017.
She says losses kept appearing while she was locked out of the system ....
She says she paid or had deducted over £44,000. Her mother-in-law sold jewellery to help. She says her contracts manager Brian Trotter asked her several times to admit falsifying the books. Persistence like that deserves a bonus..
Her mother died suddenly in March 2017. She says Post Office summoned her to a formal interview the day before the funeral and accused her of stealing.
Thoughtful scheduling, really. Her appointment ended on 27 March 2017 and she was never charged. Her mother never saw her proved right.
Post Office tells it differently. It says her appointment ended for repeated failures to account for cash and stock, and for being unable to explain or repay the last shortfall. It says its investigation found falsified entries under her assistant's login and that she later accepted she was responsible for an unexplained currency gap. Its barrister put it to her in the High Court that the losses came from her or her staff's dishonesty or errors.
She denied it and said the helpline once told her to change stock figures. Its barrister said that did not happen. She said it categorically did.
She was one of 6 lead claimants for 555 postmasters in the High Court case against Post Office, which left her outside the Historic Shortfall Scheme. She told the Inquiry on 11 May 2022 that her payments hardly touched her debts.
In January 2024 she asked Police Scotland @PoliceScotland to investigate. It said it was not investigating at that time.
The government owns Post Office and the Department for Business and Trade runs the compensation, so the owner is also the claims desk. Very handy.
Louise Dar asked for troubleshooting training. @PostOffice gave her the trouble.

Today, Afghan women burn images of the Taliban.
Tomorrow, they will defeat the Taliban with books and pens and end their oppression through education, knowledge, and courage. 🦋
And one day, we will celebrate freedom. 🕊️
👏 My brave sisters, I stand with you.

Dear Andy, All this talk and pondering. There is no perfect decision, but you make one and you run with it. You manage the fall out. You adjust as necessary. There’s no straight path as a rule, unless you’re lucky. You don’t need to wait until 2030. Just decide & make it happen.

I have an essay in the new issue of @thebafflermag about the mundane, incredible fact that London, alongside many other cities, has for the last 50ish years been filling up with Himalayan parakeets - and on the contested realm of invasion biology itself.

The trouble with hope is the disappointment when reality doesn’t match the expectation.
And I’d quite like people to say what they mean and mean what they say.
But 100 days and counting.

A heartbreaking moment from Alex Crawford’s Sky News documentary:
an Afghan girl dreams of becoming a doctor, engineer or teacher, yet sees her future slipping away. How can the world and UN, normalise relations with the Taliban while millions of girls are denied education?

It doesn’t take 5 minutes thought to understand why Keir knew that rebuilding a good working relationship with our European neighbours is key.
He knew just how much division going in feet first would cause.
So much quiet positive rebuilding undone by the 100th day @andyburnham
Freedom of movement is reciprocal. We've lost OUR freedom movement. Why the fuck, why the fuck, is this NEVER mentioned?
What govt actually demands fewer rights abroad for its own citizens? That's what happened to us. The British govt demanded the British passport be degraded ffs
If we're going to 'have the conversation' ffs you've got to make your case! Passionately. Not keep rowing back and trying to appease people you know have got it fucking wrong. This 'the British people are the bosses' 'we're not going to decide' is the worst of all fkin worlds.
EU. Of course Burnham didn't tell the cabinet what he was going to say. How could he? He doesn't know himself until it comes out of his fkin mouth.
Oh ffs. We had a cautious PM with heft who was getting results and now we've got this.
Some mornings it's just too much.

Burnham wants to 'have the conversation' about the EU and FoM. What a relief to all of us who've never stopped having the conversation!
But it's so fkin naive without a plan. Who else wants that 'conversation' for ever? Farage. It's all he's got. He can't believe his bloody luck.
"In a minute we'll be hearing from Nigel Farage who said Brexit would never have happened if he hadn't been born."
Burnham, who blabs like a teenager with no idea where he's going or how, has ensured a delighted Farage will never be off air or our screens again now ffs.

I wonder why Burnham has remained silent over Lula’s win. Miliband has tweeted. I find that odd. Especially as Lula congratulated Burnham.
The contrast between media treatment of Starmer and Burnham is so great I sometimes think I'm going mad. I ask other people, am I imagining this? No, they agree I'm not. But it doesn't bother them as much. To me, it's so undermining of our democracy I can't see it the same way.

The world cannot ignore what is happening in Sudan.
One year on from the mass atrocities in El Fasher, the UK is sanctioning those linked to these and other atrocities, and strengthening support for survivors and communities at risk of famine.
