Replying to @MrJamesMay
@MrJamesMay Please could I get a "Sod off" for my Birthday sir? I will of course accept a "Blithering idiot" if you're all out of "Sod offs". I understand there's demand for them. πŸŽ‚

On a Scottish hillside above Loch Awe there's a fence of wires that's said to hum in the wind. It's known as Anderson's Piano. It has been protecting trains from falling boulders since 1882, and it's still doing the job today. 1/n

🚨 Punter wins £997k from £4 corners accumulator - Villa fan bet £4 on 12 EFL matches all exceeding 11.5 corners - Bet won him a staggering £997,385 in total - Started as a casual weekend accumulator with friends - At half-time, several games showed worryingly low corner counts - Reading-Barnsley had just one corner at the break - Corners flooded in across all 12 games in the second half - Oxford-Bradford had zero goals but 14 corners combined - Didn't realise he'd won until half an hour after games ended - Needed wife to confirm the amount, called it "emotional" - Plans to pay off mortgage, buy a car, take a family holiday

When Hannibal Lecter famously said β€˜I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti’ he was saying more than you might think: the antidepressant MAOI prohibits the consumption of liver, fava beans and red wine. He was slyly revealing that he was not taking his medication.

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. With that in mind, I wanted to remind you of this video produced by Norwich City; it remains one of the most profound things I've ever seen produced on the subject.

Potato skin carries up to 10 times the poison of the flesh, and the advice for forty years has been to leave it on for the goodness. The poison is solanine, with its twin chaconine. The potato makes both to stop being eaten, and it puts them where the attack comes from: the peel, the eyes, the sprouts, and anywhere the tuber has gone green. Light makes more of it. Storage makes more of it. Boiling does not touch it. In 1979, 78 boys at a London school ate a lunch of potatoes that had sat in a sack over the summer holiday. Seventeen went to hospital, 3 of them seriously ill, and the report in the medical journal traced it to the glycoalkaloids in the skin. Germany's food safety institute is blunter than any British packet. Small children should not eat potatoes with the skin on. Green or sprouting potatoes go in the bin. The cooking water is discarded, because the poison the boil pulls out is in the pan, not in the drain. The legal limit is 200 milligrams a kilo, and the institute wants it halved. Then the fads that put the peel back on. The jacket potato, skin and all, for the fibre. The roasted skin-on wedges. The cook-and-cool trick for resistant starch, done with the skins left on because the recipe said so. Every one of them concentrates the one part of the plant it built to hurt you. A grandmother peeled every potato in this country until about 1985, cut out the eyes and threw the green ones away, and was told by a generation of food writers that she had been wasting the goodness. The nightshade the potato belongs to is the same family as deadly nightshade. The tuber has never forgotten it. The packet says leave the skin on.

Researchers spent 500 hours and $70,000 and found LG TVs logging plain text transcripts in standby, mapping every device in the house, and feeding it to LG's ad arm Unplug the internet and it saves the files until you plug back in. LG says its TVs don't record ambient conversations. The evidence begs to differ. 216 million of these are sitting in living rooms. Where are the regulators? Writer: Daniel

I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.
