From Handouts to Ownership: Teaching a Community to Fish. 🌱 At our 19th October fellowship, the Rotary Club of Kampala South was privileged to host @SolomonSerwanjj , LC1 Chairperson of Bamutakudde Village, who shared an inspiring approach to community transformation through purposeful leadership, accountability and self-reliance. Inspired by the vision of a clean, organised and thriving community, Solomon spoke about the importance of moving beyond handouts to creating sustainable opportunities that enable people to earn, grow and take ownership of their development. His initiatives include skilling 20 community members in culinary arts, with plans to launch Bamutakudde Catering Services, and establishing Bamutakudde Events, which aims to grow from a modest collection of plastic chairs into a fully equipped events service. He also shared an ambitious poultry initiative based on a target of 30 chickens per household to support income generation. Through partnerships and resource mobilisation, the village has secured a commitment of 1,000 chickens from TK Chicken Masaka and 20 dustbins from Oryx Gas. The community is also organised into smaller cells, each led by a designated leader, to strengthen accountability and maintain cleanliness. Beyond the initiatives, Solomon emphasised the value of structured planning, budgeting, resource mobilisation and working together to protect the systems that enable communities to progress. However, access to clean water remains a pressing need, with plans underway to develop a water source identified by a geologist. His message was a powerful reminder that lasting development is not simply about giving people fish, but equipping them with the skills, resources and structures to fish for themselves. As Rotarians, we are challenged to continue championing initiatives that empower communities, encourage self-reliance and create lasting impact. #RotaryKonyo #PeopleOfAction #rotaryeyamba #rotary
