Thinking about my visit to Seneca Meadows, NY’s largest landfill. All of our landfills are at or nearing capacity and leaking toxic chemicals into our land, water and air.
We are running out of space and time. We need to transition to a circular economy ASAP.
The good news is we have many of the technologies and policy proposals already. We must pass PRRIA, the Better Bottle Bill, and @AMKelles’s circular construction package to dramatically divert from landfills.
It might be hard to fathom now, but all progress is until it happens.
Imagine having $100M to burn and choosing to light it on fire rather than pay slightly more in taxes so your neighbors can have healthcare.
These same people will tell you homelessness is a crime and we need more police, weapons tech, and surveillance. Do not believe them.
"Right now, Gov. Hochul has a chance to sign legislation that would help lower utility bills while reducing emissions and expanding access to renewable power. We think she should." ~@SpeakerMenin & my Senate SUNNY Act counterpart, Liz Krueger.

This is the right thing to do. Morally and financially.
Now do ours, @NYSComptroller 🙏🏼.
NEW: In his 10th month in office, @MarkLevineNYC has decided not to reinvest in Israeli bonds, breaking a campaign promise on a particularly fraught issue. He said he still supports Israel, but that the bonds aren’t strong enough investments:

We're paying $300M a year for gas that leaks into our homes, making us sicker. We're paying $1B a year for gas companies to tear up our streets to repair antiquated infrastructure. And then there's the cost of storm damage.
We must invest in renewable energy instead.
New Yorkers are paying $300 million for natural gas they don't even use

Trump is counting on the fact that Americans are too inundated by his corruption to be phased by this, but the weaponization of the DOJ against a sitting Congresswoman for "immigration fraud" is a new, albeit predictable, phase of the fascist experiment.
I stand with @IlhanMN.

ABOLISH ICE. END NYPD VIOLENCE.
17 New York State Socialists in Office and Democratic nominees respond to Thursday’s shooting of Oscar Belgal and call to abolish ICE, end NYPD assistance of ICE, and disband NYPD’s SRG.
3 years ago, I passed NY's landmark law, the LLC Transparency Act, to protect tenants and other people harmed by bad actors hiding behinds shell LLCs.
The bill was effectively gutted when the Gov vetoed a key amendment last year. But I'm not giving up.... icij.org/investigations/pand…
Yesterday I had the privilege of visiting Seneca Meadows, the largest NY landfill. The community told me about its impact on their lives, their children’s health, their ability to hire workers.
The landfill is harming their ability to protect themselves & live with dignity.🧵
2/ This isn’t just a Western NY problem. 20-30% of the trash in the landfill is trucked up from NYC, polluting communities across the state. Toxic leachate is seeping into our waterways.
A landfill-backed PAC is spending hundreds of thousands to elect pro-landfill candidates.
Abolish ICE. And get the hell out of New York. gothamist.com/news/person-sh…
NY has a trash problem. Our landfills are running out of space, they’re leeching toxic chemicals, and they’re emitting a huge amount of GHG.
We must pass serious waste reduction and diversion policies this session to change this toxic trajectory. insideclimatenews.org/news/0…
All NYC families should have the ability to bike to school safely.
Such a joy to accompany these community advocates and junior advocates as we make that vision a reality!
