Slavery was an evil in which people from every continent and region participated. We should be honest about the whole history, not select the parts that are politically convenient today, especially given Britain's leading role in ending the transatlantic slave trade. If Caribbean countries are asking Britain for a formal apology for Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, will they also be asking the same of the descendants of African kingdoms, rulers and merchants who captured, sold and profited from the trade? On demands for reparations, whether through cash or debt relief, we have been down this track before. Twenty-five years ago, Jubilee 2000, Drop the Debt and Make Poverty History argued that cancelling the debts of poorer countries would give them a fresh start. More than $100 billion of debt was eventually written off, but many of those countries have since built up even bigger debts. Labour are already spending too much on Britain's welfare state, now is not the time for Andy Burnham to be providing global welfare. There is no reason British taxpayers today should be held financially responsible for things that happened generations before any of us were born. And I have even less patience for political elites in commonwealth countries who don’t know how to make their own citizens prosperous now looking for another opportunity to blame Britain. As Prime Minister, Andy Burnham should be Britain’s greatest defender. Instead, he is writing articles saying we need to confront our history (as if we haven't done enough of that) and considering another formal historical apology. Tony Blair already expressed Britain’s deep sorrow and regret for our role in the slave trade nearly twenty years ago. There is no need to do so again. This is all another navel-gazing distraction. The Commonwealth should be looking forward, not endlessly backwards. That means economic partnerships to make us all richer and deeper military and security cooperation against common threats. If every Commonwealth summit becomes an exercise in presenting Britain with demands for cash then we need to start asking if it is worth the effort.

So distasteful for a leader to blame staff. At the end of the day it is your event and the buck stops at the top!
🚨 WATCH: Nigel Farage blames "staff incompetence" for a half empty hall at Reform UK's event in London

Last night was the Conservatives’ best in a long time: four wins from five contests, three of them gains. That takes them to 29 wins since May’s local elections, more than any other party (Reform 26, Labour 26, Lib Dems 24).

“Other parties face the same scrutiny, but Reform just cock-up a hell of a lot more. That’s not a media problem, it’s a Reform one” If Reform really want to stop being criticised by the media, they should get their act together. My latest on the ITV recording for @ConHome 👇

I’m in Edinburgh and being asked a lot of questions about ITV’s Reform expose. The reported comments show yet again why we’re not doing deals with Reform. We want Reform voters back, not Reform politicians. Reform voters are being let down by the people who claim to represent them. Many of these people were the ones who let them down in the Conservative Party. We are now under new management. These people caused a lot of problems and is why I say Nigel Farage has been doing my spring cleaning. These problems will keep coming for Reform. Just as Farage is being investigated, so is Robert Jenrick, and so is Richard Tice. These problems will never end because of the kind of people they are - they don’t care about high standards of conduct. That is why I am showing those voters who want to defeat Labour but left the Conservative Party that it’s time to come home. We are under new management, and you deserve better than this.

This is the third time in three PMQs that Andy Burnham has had to correct what he’s said afterwards. This is now a recurring pattern where the PM spends all his time fixing his own gaffes, instead of sorting out welfare or finding the money to defend our country.
NEW: Andy Burnham has been forced to correct the record after his Anne Widdecombe trial blunder at PMQs yesterday. No10 has issued a clarification to Hansard and his words will be updated.

I think it's dawning on Tory defectors to Reform that they backed the wrong horse. They’re desperate for that not to be the case, hence their increasingly desperate attacks on Badenoch etc, but their descent into the gutter makes Reform's demise more, not less, likely.

The legal challenge to Project Spire: spearheaded by me and @BijanOmrani. We love the CofE and want the Church Commissioners to see sense and abandon this dubious project before it wastes even more money and causes further reputational damage. thetimes.com/uk/religion/art…

I'm furious with my party. Rather than use its huge parliamentary majority to deploy the tools of national economic planning that are available to it outside of the EU in order to deliver a project of national economic renewal, what does Labour do? Pretend Britain is helpless unless it binds itself to the rules of the increasingly right-wing EU. We might have left the EU but the 'member state mindset' of the political class never went away. I will give my all to opposing this. – at Oslo, Norway
"There is something quite perverse about Burnham bemoaning the remoteness of the out-of-touch Westminster elites only to then suck up to the even-more-out-of-touch Brussels elites." My piece on the new battle for Brexit. 👇 paulembery.com/p/were-gettin…

Ukraine’s freedom is not President Trump’s to bargain away. He is wrong to ease sanctions on Russian diesel, wrong to blame President Zelensky for prolonging Putin’s war, and wrong to undermine a nation fighting for its right to exist. Russia is the aggressor. Always has been. Reward Russia, and we should expect to see more aggression, including from other countries. We can also kiss goodbye to any just and lasting peace. This is why Conservatives have stood with Ukraine against Putin. Ukraine’s future belongs to Ukrainians. They alone have the right to choose their president, and we stand with President Zelensky because he fights not for himself, but for the survival of his country and his people.

It is sickening that the USA is now lifting sanctions on Russian fuel, and transparently ridiculous to blame Ukraine for the spike in prices that obviously began with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Putin is murdering innocent Ukrainian civilians every day. The Ukrainians are fighting for their lives. And yet the White House is apparently determined to force American drivers to bankroll Putin’s slaughter. It won’t work and I doubt it will make much difference to the price of fuel. If we want Russian oil and gas back on the world market then let’s end this war - with a free, sovereign and independent Ukraine.

Today marks three years since October 7th 2023 - the deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust. On that day, Hamas terrorists unleashed a wave of barbaric violence, murdering more than 1,200 innocent men, women and children, and taking 251 people hostage. We remember all those murdered. May their memory be a blessing.

Today alone, and in Kyiv alone, Russian jet-powered drones “vanquished” two kindergartens and two schools, an ordinary residential building, an auto repair shop, several warehouses, and communications facilities. Anywhere in the world, this choice of targets would be called by one word – terrorism. Russia has no military objective whatsoever in doing this – it is purely an attempt to break people and inflict as much harm as possible on our society. Tragically, there are people killed… My condolences to their families and loved ones. Dozens of people were injured. Overall, since yesterday, the Russians have used 277 attack drones of various types, 155 of them jet-powered. Among the damaged sites is also a building used as the residence of the Saudi Arabian Ambassador. In the Dnipro region, a sports school is among the damaged facilities. In the Sumy region, the building of a regional children’s home was damaged. If Russia were truly preparing for any real steps toward de-escalation – as it claims, particularly to American negotiators – this wave of “shahed” terror would not be happening. And we need to take a sober view of the situation. Russia knows how to send the kind of encouraging diplomatic signals that the world simply wants to hear… It knows how to send such signals in order to delay tough steps by the world in response to the war. In America, the important Lindsey Graham sanctions and tariffs law has already reached the implementation stage. It is a law that can change a lot for the better if fully implemented. This law needs to be implemented – and everyone in the world can see that there is EVERY REASON to apply it and A CLEAR PURPOSE for doing so. We are counting on effective decisions from the world and stronger pressure from our partners, so that Russia sees that manipulating diplomatic signals will not allow it to keep winning more and more time for war and terror. It is important that our other partners in the G7 and G20 also take a principled stance. New sanctions packages are being prepared – specifically targeting financial networks, supply chains for components and equipment used in the production of Russian weapons, and specific companies and individuals primarily involved in the production of Russian ballistic missiles. The new sanctions must take effect as early as October to provide a stronger foundation for changing the situation and pushing Russia toward real diplomacy. Thank you to everyone who helps Ukraine! Thank you to everyone working 24/7 to provide greater protection for Ukrainians and our state!

Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 is an integral part of our United Kingdom. The Union is as vital, as it is precious. Yet today in Cardiff a ‘Separatist Summit’ was held - showing that making the daily lives of the people of Wales better is simply NOT the Plaid priority.  Despite what they said to Senedd voters in May. Hoodwinking the electorate by disguising that their true aim was taking a wrecking ball to the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 Plaid must get on with the day job and make their objective growing the Welsh economy, cutting NHS waiting lists, improving Welsh school standards and working to deliver their missing childcare offer. Our @Conservatives party will always work to protect our Country. @KemiBadenoch @DarrenMillarMS @WelshConserv @Conservatives @Byron_Davies
