Broken windows policing is alive and well in NYC summons court. Most of the cases assigned counsel have handled this morning are fare beat or marijuana cases. The DA wouldn’t prosecute them, but NYPD keeps writing the summonses, and the Hearing Officers here won't dismiss them.

Seems we’re going to have to consult w/ Kate (sarcasm) in order to push @cmenchaca to legislate to #EndBrokenWindows policing since that’s how he gets things done in his office. We need to wait for his tax payer funded chakra realignment before we can have police accountability

A single video of police abuse may grab headlines, but multiple videos together show us something deeper, institutionalized and far more harrowing. Learn about our project with @GritoSunsetPark and how we used video to tell the story elgrito.witness.org #ProfilingThePolice

Low income communities of color have been directly targeted + impacted by fixed injustice system that make money off criminalizing poverty, making race reasonable suspicion, labeling our youth as gangs + biased policing that forces the disappearance of our communities.

NYPD 76th pct Sgt. escalates an unnecessary stop into an assault on student & bs charges. ADA offers an ACD, she rather go to trial to prove her innocence & the cop’s guilt. PROP at Brooklyn arraignments this AM: 9 of 10 cases, 90%, NYers of color; charges: fare evasion, suspended license, disorderly conduct. Purposeless, harmful arrests by #NYPD, ditto prosecutions by DA. #EndBrokenWindows.
Interesting to hear all of the criticisms of "zero tolerance" politics coming from NYC liberals - which originated here in the 90s and which most of them were fine with. #EndBrokenWindows

Pot smoking summonses will begin in NYC in September. But remember: lighting up will still get you a ticket, and if you’ve got no ID, a violent record, an open warrant, or if you’re driving high, you’ll still be arrested.
