Layers Beneath St. Peter’s: a mesmerizing story of millennia ✝️✨
First of all, this infographic is extremely simplified (so please, spare us the Community Notes)
The underground structures are not arranged in perfectly aligned layers like a modern skyscraper, but the illustration does contain a kernel of truth and gives a fairly good idea of what lies beneath St. Peter’s Basilica
1. The Basilica
This is the part everyone knows and can visit normally: the nave, the papal altar, Bernini’s Baldachin, and Michelangelo’s dome
Yet the floor we walk on is only the most visible part of a much deeper history
2. The Vatican Grottoes
Located beneath the Basilica floor, they are open to visitors free of charge, without a reservation
They contain the tombs of numerous popes and other funerary monuments
They are not one uniform space: the Grottoes include chapels, corridors, and areas from different periods, developed over the centuries
3. The remains of the old Constantinian Basilica
Before the present Basilica, consecrated in 1626, stood the great basilica commissioned by Emperor Constantine in the 4th century
Some of its ancient structures, walls, and traces of earlier buildings survive beneath the current church
They do not form a separate, perfectly preserved floor, as the infographic might suggest, but rather an archaeological landscape of considerable complexity
4. The Vatican Necropolis
Descending further, we reach an ancient Roman burial ground containing mausoleums, tombs, decorations, and passageways dating back to the early centuries of the Christian era
This is one of the site’s most extraordinary features: beneath the monumental Basilica lies part of ancient Rome, with its burial structures and evidence of a world very different from the one we see above ground
This area is not freely accessible
Visits require advance booking and an authorized guide, with visitor numbers strictly limited
5. The Tomb of St. Peter
At the heart of this archaeological area lies the site traditionally identified as the burial place of the Apostle Peter
Archaeological investigations have uncovered funerary structures and evidence of early Christian veneration that have played a fundamental role in the site’s history
It is important, however, to distinguish the site venerated as the Apostle’s tomb from the possibility of proving every detail concerning the human remains with absolute certainty
Despite its graphic limitations, this infographic conveys an interesting concept: St. Peter’s is not simply a basilica built over another basilica, but a layered complex of architecture, archaeology, burial sites, and history
Of course, the actual spaces do not form five regular, perfectly aligned floors
Their shapes, elevations, and orientations differ; some areas are accessible, others can only be seen on specialist tours, and still others remain preserved as archaeological remains closed to the public
But the underlying idea is correct: descending beneath St. Peter’s means moving through different historical periods, from the grandeur of the present Basilica to Imperial Rome and the origins of Christian tradition…
Yes, Hillary Clinton‘s Pizzagate interview yesterday.
BUT… ALSO… did anyone notice that the brand name of the frozen vegetables the Red Baron guy is stocking is… BIBIGO? 👀🔥
I didn’t see the owl before.🔥
I did notice the blackmail and the black-and-white earrings.
And behind her… At first, I thought it was a UFO reference, but it’s a little fish next to her head and a big one more off camera.

What’s with the childish background with fish in the water above, and perhaps a bird in the sky below? Then, the juvenile owl to the left and dress trinket to the right? Bandages, wrinkly shirt, lavaliere mic hastily put on, frumpy necklace & hair? Odd menagerie. Abnormal optics to announce something of importance.

Ambassador Huckabee, this is unreleased video of an American who was beaten almost to death last week by Israeli settlers. You know his name because he came to you for help, but you blew him off. That’s disgraceful. Do your job.

Yes.
And… no one has sufficiently looked into McKinley‘s assassination specifically at the Buffalo World’s Fair. The Buffalo World’s Fair featured a medical pavilion attraction with some of the most cutting edge medical technology of the day. Yet, they failed to save the President of the United States. It took him a week to die, slowly, in an agonizing death — which says to me, there was more than one person involved in his assassination.
And what about the Bolshevik woman communist from Rochester who was such an influence on the man who shot McKinley?
